Remarks on GRN-type systems

2020

Systems of ordinary differential equations that appear in gene regulatory networks theory are considered. We are focused on asymptotical behavior of solutions. There are stable critical points as well as attractive periodic solutions in two-dimensional and three-dimensional systems. Instead of considering multiple parameters (10 in a two-dimensional system) we focus on typical behaviors of nullclines. Conclusions about possible attractors are made.

Specific norovirus interaction with Lewis x and Lewis a on human intestinal inflammatory mucosa during refractory inflammatory bowel disease

2021

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), are progressive diseases affecting millions of people each year. Flare-ups during IBD result in severe mucosal alterations of the small intestine (in CD) and in the colon and rectum (in CD and UC).

Un barrio marginado no es un barrio marginal. A propósito de Nazaret (Valencia)

2016

This article takes us to Nazaret, an outlying district on Valencia’s waterfront which we consider from three complementary perspectives: the synchronic vision of its current socio-spatial structure, the diachronic and processual contextualization of the changes it has undergone in the last century, and the perceptions and images which characterize the neighbourhood, together with the features, activity and incidence of its associative fabric. The analysis focuses on the behaviour of a set of interconnected factors, including the impact of the port and urban development policy, its socioeconomic make-up, the consistency of its associative fabric and its relations with government. Whereas the…

Prevention from radiation damage by natural products

2018

Abstract Background Radiotherapy is a mainstay of cancer treatment since decades. Ionizing radiation (IR) is used for destruction of cancer cells and shrinkage of tumors. However, the increase of radioresistance in cancer cells and radiation toxicity to normal tissues are severe concerns. The exposure to radiation generates intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), which leads to DNA damage by lipid peroxidation, removal of thiol groups from cellular and membrane proteins, strand breaks and base alterations. Hypothesis Plants have to deal with radiation-induced damage (UV-light of sun, other natural radiation sources). Therefore, it is worth speculating that radioprotective mechanisms ha…

NF-κB Is a Potential Molecular Drug Target in Triple-Negative Breast Cancers.

2017

Breast cancer continues to cause significant burden in global health morbidity and mortality. Triple-negative breast cancers (TNBCs) are highly aggressive with poor prognosis and are characterized by lack of expression of estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and human epidermal growth factor receptor (Her-2). TNBCs are often resistant to cytotoxic chemotherapy and pose major difficulty in achieving personalized medicine due to their molecular heterogeneity. There is increasing evidence that the aberrant activation of nuclear factor (NF)-κB signaling is a frequent characteristic of TNBCs. We evaluated the effects of different potential NF-κB inhibitors, such as bisindolylmaleimide I (BI…

Dynamin-like proteins (DLPs) are a family of membrane-active proteins with low sequence identity. The proteins operate in different organelles in eukaryotic cells, where they trigger vesicle formation, membrane fusion, or organelle division. As discussed here, representatives of this protein family have also been identified in chloroplasts and DLPs are very common in cyanobacteria. Since cyanobacteria and chloroplasts, an organelle of bacterial origin, have similar internal membrane systems, we suggest that DLPs are involved in membrane dynamics in cyanobacteria and chloroplasts. Here, we discuss the features and activities of DLPs with a focus on their potential presence and activity in ch…

Hsp70 proteins and their Hsp40 co-chaperones are essential components of cellular chaperone networks in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. Here, we performed a genetic analysis to define the protein domains required for the key functions of the major Hsp40/DnaJ protein Sll0897 of the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC6803. The expression of the N-terminally located J- and G/F-domains is essential and sufficient for the proteins' fundamental in vivo functions, whereas the presence of the full-length protein, containing the C-terminal substrate-binding domains, is crucial under stress conditions.

Theabrownin Inhibits Cell Cycle Progression and Tumor Growth of Lung Carcinoma through c-myc-Related Mechanism.

2017

Green tea, the fresh leaves of Camellia sinensis, is not only a health-promoting beverage but also a traditional Chinese medicine used for prevention or treatment of cancer, such as lung cancer. Theabrownin (TB) is the main fraction responsible for the medicinal effects of green tea, but whether it possesses anti-cancer effect is unknown yet. This study aimed to determine the in vitro and in vivo anti-lung cancer effect of TB and explore the underlying molecular mechanism, by using A549 cell line and Lewis lung carcinoma-bearing mice. In cellular experiment, MTT assay was performed to evaluate the inhibitory effect and IC50 values of TB, and flow cytometry was conducted to analyze the cell …
