Visual function after implantation of an aspheric bifocal intraocular lens.

2009

Purpose To evaluate distance, intermediate, and near vision after bifocal aspheric AcrySof ReSTOR SN6AD1 intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Setting Fernandez-Vega Ophthalmological Institute, Oviedo, Spain. Methods Binocular distance best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) (4.0 m), best distance-corrected near (40.0 cm) and intermediate (70.0, 60.0, 50.0 cm) acuities, and contrast sensitivity under photopic (85.0 candelas [cd]/m 2 ) and mesopic (3.0 cd/m 2 ) conditions with and without glare were measured postoperatively. A patient-satisfaction and visual phenomena questionnaire was administered. Results Six months postoperatively, the mean acuities (logMAR) were binocular BCVA, −0.064 ± 0.049…

Predictive value of heidelberg retina tomograph parameters for the development of glaucoma in the European glaucoma prevention study

2015

Purpose To determine whether baseline Heidelberg Retina Tomograph (HRT) measurements of the optic disc are associated with the development of open-angle glaucoma (OAG) in individuals with ocular hypertension in the European Glaucoma Prevention Study (EGPS). Design Retrospective analysis of a prospective, randomized, multicenter, double-masked, controlled clinical trial. Methods There were 489 participants in the HRT Ancillary Study to the EGPS. Each baseline HRT parameter was assessed in univariate and multivariate proportional hazards models to determine its association with the development of OAG. Proportional hazards models were used to identify HRT variables that predicted which partici…

Maggot therapy following orbital exenteration

2007

Orbital exenteration is a radical surgery reserved for the treatment of locally invasive or potentially life-threatening orbital tumours.1 Complications occur after 20–25% of exenterations and include tissue necrosis (6%) and infection (3–4%).2–4 In the present report, we describe the management of a post-exenteration orbital infection by the use of maggots. An 82-year-old multimorbid man presented with a fist-sized painless tumour of the left orbit (fig 1A). Computed tomography demonstrated an orbital mass clearly demarcated from the surrounding tissue (fig 1B). After biopsy, the neoplasm was classified as a borderline-malignant extrapleural solitary fibrous tumour. Therefore, a total orbi…

Intravitreal Plasmin Without Associated Vitrectomy as a Treatment for Refractory Diabetic Macular Edema

2009

To determine the effectiveness of a low-dose intravitreal injection of autologous plasmin enzyme (APE), without the performance of a vitrectomy, as a treatment for refractory diffuse diabetic macular edema (DDME).Prospective, comparative, interventional case series.Sixteen patients with bilateral DDME who had not responded to prior laser photocoagulation. All patients received an injection in 1 eye, while the other eye served as a control.Intravitreal 0.2 mL APE injection under topical anesthesia. The APE was obtained using a simplified method.Central macular thickness (CMT) at 1 and 6 months, determined by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA).All patie…

Comparison of the influence of corneo-scleral and scleral lenses on ocular surface and tear film metrics in a presbyopic population

2018

PURPOSE: To assess and compare the effect of the corneo-scleral lenses (C-ScL) and scleral lenses (ScL) on tear film parameters and central corneal thickness (CCT) in healthy presbyopic subjects. METHODS: Thirty subjects wore two contact lenses (CLs), randomly assigned, of neutral power, but of different diameters, 12.7mm (C-ScL) and 18mm (ScL) and being equal in the others parameters: material (HS100) and centre thickness (0.29mm). At baseline, 20min after insertion and at 8h, the tear meniscus area (TMA) and CCT was measured (with optical coherence tomography) as well as tear osmolarity. RESULTS: TMA revealed statistical differences for both lenses at 20min (p<0.001), and also at 8h (p=0.…

Geo-Epidemiology of Age-Related Macular Degeneration: New Clues Into the Pathogenesis

2015

Abstract PURPOSE: To evaluate the demographic, geographic, and race-related variables that account for geographic variability in prevalence rates of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). DESIGN: Systematic review, meta-regression, and decision-tree analysis. METHODS: A systematic literature review of PubMed, Medline, Web of Science, and Embase databases identified population-based studies on the prevalence of AMD published before May 2014. Only population-based studies that took place in a spatially explicit geographic area that could be geolocalized, and used retinal photographs and standardized grading classifications, were included. Latitude and longitude data (geolocalization) and the…

Visual function after bilateral implantation of a new zonal refractive aspheric multifocal intraocular lens.

2011

Purpose To evaluate visual function after bilateral implantation of a zonal refractive aspheric multifocal intraocular lens (IOL). Setting Private practice surgery center, Valencia, Spain. Design Cohort study. Methods Consecutive eyes with cataract had bilateral implantation of Lentis Mplus LS-312 multifocal IOLs. Distance, intermediate, and near visual acuities; contrast sensitivity; defocus curves; and a quality-of-vision questionnaire, including presence of halos or dysphotopsia, were evaluated 6 months postoperatively. A control group of age-matched monofocal pseudophakic patients was included to compare contrast sensitivity function. Results In the multifocal group, the mean binocular …

Multifocal intraocular lenses for unilateral cataract in children.

2009

Purpose To evaluate the implantation of apodized diffractive multifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) in children with unilateral cataract. Setting Ophthalmology Service, Hospital Clinico Lozano Blesa, Zaragoza, Spain. Design Prospective clinical study. Methods Five children between 4 and 6 years of age with unilateral cataract had cataract extraction and implantation of an apodized diffractive multifocal IOL (AcrySof Restor SN60D3). Phacoaspiration was accompanied by posterior capsulorhexis followed by an anterior vitrectomy. Uncorrected distance (UDVA), corrected distance (CDVA), and corrected near (CNVA) visual acuities; binocular function using the Worth 4-dot test and the TNO stereotest; a…

Efficacy of systemic administration of riboflavin on a rabbit model of corneal alkali burn

2020

AbstractChanges in the barrier mechanisms in the eye should determine the rational route for the administration and dosage of each drug in the treatment of traumatic injuries and other pathologies. The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy of intra-arterial delivery of 14C-riboflavin (as an “indicator”) and compare it with intravenous and intramuscular administration in an animal model of chemical eye burn. 14C-riboflavin (14C-I) was administered by intra-arterial (carotid artery), intravenous (femoral vein) and intramuscular (femoral muscle) routes. The total radioactivity was determined over 2 h in the plasma and structures of the rabbit’s eyes using a scintillation counter. The r…

ReSTOR® Diffractive versus Array®2 Zonal-progressive Multifocal Intraocular Lens: a Contralateral Comparison

2007

PURPOSE. To evaluate near and distance visual performance after implantation of a diffractive multifocal intraocular lens (MIOL) (AcrySof ReSTOR ® ) or a refractive MIOL (Array ® 2) in bilateral cataract surgery. METHODS. In this prospective, comparative trial, 18 patients with bilateral cataract were selected to have lens surgery with asymmetric MIOL implantation. Eighteen eyes received ReSTOR MIOL and the 18 fellow eyes were implanted with Array 2. Five months after second lens implantation, main postoperative outcomes were uncorrected and distance corrected near visual acuities (VA). Secondary outcomes were distance VA and near acuity with power add, contrast sensitivity with and without…
