Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of diode laser irradiation and bleaching materials on the dentinal tubule diameter after laser bleaching. Material and Methods: The dentin discs of 40 extracted third molar were used in this experiment. Each disc surface was divided into two halves by grooving. Half of samples were laser bleached at different wavelengths with two different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide. Other half of each disc with no laser bleaching remained as a negative control. Microwave phase shifter based on fibre Bragg grating

A variable delay line is presented for phased array antennas based on a fibre Bragg grating which has a uniform period and operates at constant optical wavelength. The Bragg wavelength of a localised part of the fibre grating is modified by straining the fibre, the optical carrier is reflected by the strained part of the grating and the time delay of the microwave modulating signal is determined by the position where the strain has been applied. In this initial experiment time delay variations up to 330 ps in the frequency range 1 – 14 GHz have been achieved.
Raman spectrum of the high pressure phase of polyethylene

The Raman spectrum of the hexagonal high pressure phase of polyethylene was measured at 5.2 kbar and 240 °C, using a hydrostatic high pressure cell. The spectrum is largely identical to that obtained for the melt. This result indicates that the conformational short range order in the hexagonal phase remains melt —like and is not modified by the overall straightening of chains.

A model of human eye for experiments in vision research has been developed using PLZT ceramics. This ``artificial eye{''} allows to simulate light scattering caused by cataract in the eye lens. Light scattering of a composite eye lens of the model depends on the electric field applied to a transparent electrooptic PLZT ceramics plate that is attached directly to the lens. The image degradation in such a model eye at various degrees of scattering is studied observing and recording the contrast of images on the ``retinal plane{''} created by standard test objects with different spatial frequency or by a He-Ne laser source passing a diffractive transparent placed before the eye.
Substrate and atmosphere influence on oxygen p-doped graphene

Abstract The mechanisms responsible for p-type doping of substrate supported monolayer graphene (Gr) by thermal treatments in oxygen ambient have been investigated by micro-Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), considering commonly employed dielectric substrates, such as SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 thin films grown on Si. While a high p-type doping (∼10 13 cm −2 ) is observed for Gr on SiO 2 , no significant doping is found for Gr samples on the Al 2 O 3 substrate, suggesting a key role of the Gr/SiO 2 interface states in the trapping of oxygen responsible for the Gr p-type doping. Background: Examination of surface-bound heparin on synthetic polymers can only be performed by few staining methods. These methods are limited by an only approximate detection of heparin visible at high magnification. Other methods only measure heparin quantitatively (per square dimension) and are rather sensitive to artifacts. Summary Purpose After determining the mean intensity of ultraviolet radiation to which the human eye is exposed at Mediterranean latitudes, this data is used to evaluate the efficacy of the ultraviolet filters incorporated into various intraocular lenses. Methods Ultraviolet radiation measured at Mediterranean latitudes was used as a reference for the theoretical calculation of the amount of radiation to which the human eye is exposed. Measuring the refractive state of an eye based on the intensity of the retinal reflex

AbstractWhen examining the fundus of the eye with an ophthalmoscope, the intensity of the retinal reflex depends on the refractive state of the eye. In this study, application of this phenomenon for measuring the refractive state of the eye is demonstrated. First, a calibration curve relating the intensity of the retinal reflex and the refractive state was obtained using a model eye. Next, the intensity of the retinal reflex was measured while subjects were viewing a checker-board pattern, the distance of which was varied within the range from 0.17 to 1 m. Optical-field induced volume- and surface-relief formation phenomenon in thin films of vitreous chalcogenide semiconductors

In this report the study of direct recording of the surface relief gratings on amorphous chalcogenide thin (2.5-5μm) films is presented by three different recording setups. Recording was performed on As2S3 by 532nm wavelength laser light. Additionally the evolution of surface relief in dependence from the recording time and polarization has been investigated in detail. The mechanism of the direct recording of surface relief on amorphous chalcogenide films based on the photo-induced plasticity has been discussed.
Novel laser technologies for human skin in-vivo assessment

Two experimental methodologies for human skin optical non-invasive in-vivo assessment have been developed and clinically tested - imaging of the laser-excited autofluorescence fading rate, and simultaneous recording of the reflectance photoplethysmography signals at several laser wavelengths with different skin penetration depths. Details of both equipments are described along with some measurement results illustrating feasibility of the novel technologies.
