Multiple-unit responses to pitch changes in rabbits
1996
Multiple-unit activity (MUA) was recorded from the hippocampus (Hc), the visual cortex (VCx) and the cerebellar cortex (CerCx) in rabbits when pitch deviant tones were presented in a series of standard tones (oddball situation) and when standard tones were absent (deviant-alone situation). Significant MMN-like responses (deviant responses minus standard responses in the oddball situation) occurred in Hc, reflecting a MUA increase to the standards and its decrease to the deviants. In accordance with parallel ERPs reported earlier, the MMN-like responses reflected responses only to different presentation frequencies of stimuli. Non-selectivity in the pitch of such responses in VCx and a lack …
Deliberate Arterial Hypotension Does Not Reduce Intraocular Pressure in Pigs
1992
Among the accepted advantages of general anesthesia in ophthalmic surgery is improved control of intraocular pressure (IOP). Although standard textbooks advocate deliberate arterial hypotension to facilitate intraocular surgery by reducing IOP, scientific proof of such an effect is lacking. The authors investigated effects of induced arterial hypotension on IOP in an anesthetized porcine model. Forty-two piglets were anesthetized with piritramide, were placed in the prone position, and had the anterior chamber of one eye punctured with a small Teflon cannula to measure IOP. Six pigs were used in a pilot study to establish dose-response relationships for the hypotensive agents; 36 pigs were …
Effects of transdermal hormone replacement therapy on levels of soluble P- and E-selectin in postmenopausal healthy women
2002
Abstract Objective: To study the adhesion molecule pattern in postmenopausal women who were not receiving hormone replacement therapy (HRT), HRT users, and fertile women. Design: Case-control study. Setting: Second University of Naples, Naples, Italy. Patient(s): Fifty healthy naturally postmenopausal women and 20 fertile women. Intervention(s): Twenty-six women received no HRT and 24 received continuous transdermal 17β−estradiol, 0.05 mg/d, plus oral acetate nomegestrol, 5 mg/d. Main Outcome Measure(s): Levels of the soluble forms of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), E-selectin, and P-selectin. Result(s): Women who did not received HRT …
Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Angiography of the Pulmonary Vasculature
1998
Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) has been established as a powerful noninvasive imaging modality. Its applications to the study of the pulmonary vasculature have been hampered by a multitude of factors, such as respiratory and cardiac motion artifacts, saturation problems, long acquisition times
Time response of the vision binocularity by use of dynamic suppression of retinal images
1999
We present a novel technique for determination the stereopsis dynamic response, using as stimulus a random dot stereopair. Stereopsis can be evoked or depressed by continuous or flash illumination of the stimulus with simultaneous control of a special light scattering obstacle build in the visual path of one eye. The obstacle--a thin plate of electrooptical PLZT ceramics-- exposes (by applying of the voltage to semitransparent gold electrodes deposited on both surfaces of the plate) light scattering so blurring the retinal image, similar as for an eye with a cataract, depressing stereopsis. The random dot stereopair contains contours of images with a different stereodisparity. The PLZT plat…
Tritium retention measurements by accelerator mass spectrometry and full combustion of W-coated and uncoated CFC tiles from the JET divertor
2016
Abstract Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) and the full combustion method (FCM) followed by liquid scintillation counting were applied to quantitatively determine the tritium retention in the tungsten-coated carbon fibre composites (CFC), in comparison to uncoated CFC tiles from the JET divertor. The tiles were adjacent and exposed to plasma operations between 2007 and 2009. The tritium depth profiles are showing that the tritium retention on the W-coated tile was reduced by a factor of 13.5 in comparison to the uncoated tile whereas the bulk tritium concentration is approximately the same for both tiles.
Applicability of the dielectric barrier discharge for helium ash measurements in the divertor region
2016
Abstract Controlled fusion based on the magnetic confinement of the plasma is one of the main aims of the Euro-fusion programme. In the fusion device, the hydrogen isotopes, in nuclear reactions, will produce helium nuclei. The products, as the ash, will be removed from the plasma in the region of the so-called divertor. Controlling the helium to hydrogen ratio in this ‘exhaust gas’ will provide information about the efficiency of the fusion process as well as of the efficiency of the helium removal system. One of the methods to perform this task is to study the properties of the discharge conducted in such exhaust gas. In this paper, the applicability of the dielectric barrier discharge (D…
Negative association between parental care and sibling cooperation in earwigs: a new perspective on the early evolution of family life?
2015
International audience; The evolution of family life requires net fitness benefits for offspring, which are commonly assumed to mainly derive from parental care. However, an additional source of benefits for offspring is often overlooked: cooperative interactions among juvenile siblings. In this study, we examined how sibling cooperation and parental care could jointly contribute to the early evolution of family life. Specifically, we tested whether the level of food transferred among siblings (sibling cooperation) in the European earwig F orficula auricularia (1) depends on the level of maternal food provisioning (parental care) and (2) is translated into offspring survival, as well as fem…
