Comparison of laser and power bleaching techniques in tooth color change

2017

BACKGROUND Laser-assisted bleaching uses laser beam to accelerate release of free radicals within the bleaching gel to decrease time of whitening procedure. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of power bleaching using Opalescence Xtra Boost® and laser bleaching technique using LaserSmile gel and diode laser as an activator in their tooth whitening capacity. MATERIAL AND METHODS Student t test showed that the laser bleaching group significantly outperformed the power bleaching group in changing ∆E (p=0.977). RESULTS Similarly, while comparing the groups in changing ∆L, the laser bleaching group indicated significantly superior results (p=0.953). Statistical data from student t …

Comparative transcriptomics of albino and warningly coloured caterpillars

2018

AbstractColouration is perhaps one of the most prominent adaptations for survival and reproduction of most taxa. Colouration is of particular importance for aposematic species, which rely on their colouring and patterning to act as a warning signal against predators. Most research has focused on the evolution of warning colouration by natural selection. However, little information is available for colour mutants of aposematic species, particularly at the genomic level. Here I compare the transcriptomes of albino mutant caterpillars of the wood tiger moth (Arctia plantaginis) to those of their full-sibs having their distinctive orange-black warning colouration. The results showed >300 dif…

Superdiluted atropine at 0.01% reduces progression in children and adolescents. A 5 year study of safety and effectiveness

2018

Abstract Objective To confirm the clinical security and effectiveness of the daily application of 0.01% superdiluted atropine eyedrops in the progression of myopia in children. Material and methods A total of 200 children 9–12 years of age were randomized into a treated group and a control without treatment. Refraction under cycloplegia was performed. Results Myopia progression of the treated group was −0.14 ± 0.35 versus −0.65 ± 0.54 in the control group without treatment. Only 2% of patients were forced to stop treatment due to side effects. Conclusion Atropine superdiluted atropine 0.01% eyedrops is effective and well tolerated, and reduced myopia progression by 25%.

Langzeitverlauf 10 Jahre nach transpupillarer Thermotherapie (TTT) kleiner, posteriorer maligner Aderhautmelanome

2011

Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term results of transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) for small malignant choroidal melanomas. Patients and methods In the time period 1/1998 to 10/1999 in a prospective non-randomised analysis 26 eyes with small malignant melanomas (located posterior to the equator with base ≤ 12 and thickness ≤ 4.5 mm) were primary treated with the TTT standard protocol (follow-up over a time span of at least 10 years). Results Thirteen women and thirteen men (mean age: 64 years) underwent TTT. The mean preoperative tumour thickness was 2.45 mm (0.8 - 4.5 mm). Ten years postoperatively tumour regression without recurrence after 1.4 treatment sessions …

Radiologic and Intraoperative Finding of Intimal Tear in Type A Intramural Hematoma of the Aorta

2019

AbstractAortic intramural hematoma (IMH) is described as “dissection without intimal tear” due to rhexis of vasa vasorum, which results in bleeding within the tunica media in the absence of intimal disruption or blood flow communication. The aim of our study is to validate perioperative evidence of intimal entry tear in IMH patients and to suggest that this entity may represent a part of a disease and not a separate disease.

Evidence of intimal tear in type A intramural hematoma of the aorta: A case series

2017

Highlights • We report two cases of type A intramural hematoma of the aorta. • We found radiological and intraoperative evidence of an intimal tear. • This finding supports the hypotesis that IMH belong to “aortic dissection” disease.

Signals from the deep-sea: Genetic structure, morphometric analysis, and ecological implications of Cyclothone braueri (Pisces, Gonostomatidae) early…

2020

Abstract Cyclothone braueri (Stomiiformes, Gonostomatidae) is a widely distributed fish inhabiting the mesopelagic zone of marine tropical and temperate waters. Constituting one of the largest biomasses of the ocean, C. braueri is a key element in most of the ecological processes occurring in the twilight layer. We focused on the ecological processes linked to early life stages in relation to marine pelagic environmental drivers (temperature, salinity, food availability and geostrophic currents) considering different regions of the Central Mediterranean Sea. A multivariate morphometric analysis was carried out using six parameters with the aim of discerning different larval morphotypes, whi…

Genetic Variants Associated With Human Eye Size Are Distinct From Those Conferring Susceptibility to Myopia

2021

Purpose: Emmetropization requires coordinated scaling of the major ocular components, corneal curvature and axial length. This coordination is achieved in part through a shared set of genetic variants that regulate eye size. Poorly coordinated scaling of corneal curvature and axial length results in refractive error. We tested the hypothesis that genetic variants regulating eye size in emmetropic eyes are distinct from those conferring susceptibility to refractive error. Methods: A genome-wide association study (GWAS) for corneal curvature in 22,180 adult emmetropic individuals was performed as a proxy for a GWAS for eye size. A polygenic score created using lead GWAS variants was tested fo…

Nasal palatal : segment complex

1995

This paper focuses on the nature of a segment which is always problematical —the palatal nasal. Phonetic results found in the acoustic, perceptive and articulate spheres, showing the different features of this nasal with regards to others, are the point of departure for a brief reflection on the phonological nature of this segment, taking into account the feature geometry and the articulatory phonology. It concludes by considering the palatal nasal /?/ as a complex segment formed by /n+j/ and the imputation, to temporary effects, of a degree of major o minor assimilation and gestural overlapping during effective perception of /?/, of /n+j/ or of /n+i/.

Analysis and applicability of protocols to diagnosis of refractive errors in children

2018
