Activities of angiotensin-converting enzymes ACE1 and ACE2 and inhibition by bioactive peptides in porcine ocular tissues.

2009

An active local renin-angiotensin system (RAS) has recently been found in the human eye. The aim of the present study was to compare the activities of central RAS enzymes (ACE1 and 2) in porcine ocular tissues, morphologically and physiologically close to the human eye. In addition, the effects of three ACE-inhibitory tripeptides on these enzymes were evaluated.Enucleated fresh porcine eyes were used. Activities of ACE1 and ACE2 and their inhibition by bioactive tripeptides (Ile-Pro-Pro, Val-Pro-Pro, Leu-Pro-Pro) as well as by a standard ACE-inhibitor captopril were assayed in the vitreous body, the retina and the ciliary body using fluorometric detection methods.Activity of ACE1 as well as…

Color Doppler imaging of the eye and orbit A synopsis of a 400 case experience

2009

Color Doppler imaging (CDI) is a recent advance in ultrasonography that allows simultaneous two-dimensional imaging of structure and blood flow. Doppler information is superimposed in color over a conventional gray-scale ultrasound image. Using this technique we have examined 400 eyes. The central retinal artery, posterior ciliary arteries, ophthalmic artery, the central retinal vein and the vortex veins could be located in all normal eyes. Using the color image as a guide, Doppler spectral analysis is used for quantitative assessment of blood flow velocity in these vessels. We also studied patients with intraocular tumors, arterial and venous retinal occlusions, orbital vascular anomalies …

Radiäre Optikusneurotomie (RON) bei retinalen Zentralvenenverschlüssen

2007

Background Compression in the lamina cribrosa is discussed as a reason for central retinal vein occlusion. Radial optic neurotomy should release the pressure and increase venous blood outflow. Patients and methods In a clinical trial 27 eyes with central retinal vein occlusion (22 eyes with clinical ischaemia, 5 eyes with continuous disc oedema and visual acuity below 4/10) underwent surgical decompression by vitrectomy and radial optic neurotomy. During surgery the intravenous pressure in the central vein was tested by infusion dynamometry before and right next to the incision. Follow up-time minimally was 1.5 years. Results Infusion dynamometry demonstrated a decrease of the central vein …

Toxisches Schock Syndrom

1990

We report about a one year old girl with toxic shock syndrome (TSS), which was confirmed by a significant rise of TSST-1 titers. In addition to known manifestations of TSS, to our knowledge this is the first report about development of polyserositis in this disease. Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) was elevated at initial evaluation and fell under treatment with cortisone. This finding is in contrast to in-vitro observations. We believe that the use of cortisone in TSS warrants further investigation.

Clinical indications for cardiac computed tomography. From the Working Group of the Cardiac Radiology Section of the Italian Society of Medical Radio…

2012

Iris Claw Phakic Lens—Intermediate and Long-term Corneal Endothelial Changes

1994

OBJECTIVE: To study the alterations in the corneal endothelial layer two years after the implantation of iris claw phakic lenses. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study of postoperative results with a minimum follow-up of 6 months, maximum of two years and a mean of 14 months. SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology, ‘La Fe’ University Hospital, Department of Surgery of Valencia School of Medicine, Valencia, Spain. PATIENTS: Ninety eyes of 70 patients presenting high myopia who underwent anterior chamber phakic lens implantation with iris fixation IOLs in the last two years. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Non-contact specular microscopy with video image system was used to perform examination of the corneal e…

Eye lens equivalent dose in interventional neuroradiology based on OSL dosimetry

2016

Over the past years there has been an increase in the assessment of eye lens doses in interventional radiology procedures. This is due to the new recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP-2012 Publication 118) that proposes to reduce equivalent dose limit for the eye lens. The aim of this study is to make estimates of equivalent dose received by eye lens of the medical staff in interventional neuroradiology procedures. Consequently, this study presents an alternative for eye lens dosimetry. For this purpose nanoDot dosimeters based on optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) technology from Landauer Inc. product were used. The measurements obtained for …

Estimation of equivalent dose to the eye lens and hands in wrist surgery using OSL dosimetry

2016

The new recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP-2012 Publication 118) proposes reducing the limit of equivalent dose to the eye lens. For this reason, it is necessary to make estimates about received equivalent dose to the eye lens of medical staff. This study provides an alternative to dosimetry of the eye lens and hands, using dosimeters nanoDots based on optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) technology in wrist surgery procedure carried out with fluoroscopy.

2017

Purpose To compare two surgical approaches for treating encapsulated blebs after trabeculectomy with mitomycin C, in terms of the development of intraocular pressure and progression of glaucoma in a long-term follow up: 1. bleb needling alone vs. 2. a combined approach of needling with additional transconjunctival scleral flap sutures, to prevent early ocular hypotony. Methods Forty-six patients with failing blebs after trabeculectomy with mitomycin C were enrolled in this study. Patients received either needling revision alone (group 1; n = 23) or a combined needling with additional transconjuctival flap sutures, if intraoperatively the intraocular pressure was estimated to be low (group 2…
