An eye tracking comparison of external pointing cues and internal continuous cues in learning with complex animations

2010

Abstract Two experiments used eye tracking to investigate a novel cueing approach for directing learner attention to low salience, high relevance aspects of a complex animation. In the first experiment, comprehension of a piano mechanism animation containing spreading-colour cues was compared with comprehension obtained with arrow cues or no cues. Eye tracking data revealed differences in learner attention patterns between the different experimental conditions. The second experiment used eye tracking with synchronized and non-synchronized cues to investigate the role of dynamic direction of attention in cueing effectiveness. Results of Experiment 1 showed that spreading-colour cues resulted…

Preparation and characterisation of Ce:YAG -polycarbonate composites for white LED

2016

Ce:YAG-polycarbonate composites were prepared with several amounts of Ce:YAG in the range 0.1-5 wt.% by using melt compounding. The structure and morphology of the composites were investigated by means of X-ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy. The optical properties of the composites were studied by using photoluminescence spectroscopy. The intermolecular interaction between the polymer and the filler surface was investigated using 13C cross-polarization magic-angle spinning NMR spectroscopy (13C {1H} CP-MAS NMR). The results showed that the dispersion of the particles in the polymer, and the optical properties, depend on the Ce:YAG amount. The composites were combined w…

Direct observation of a buckling transition during the formation of thin colloidal crystals

2007

We have investigated a colloidal suspension in a thin wedge formed by two glass plates in the presence of a lateral pressure. Starting with a single hexagonal layer, with increasing separation between the glass plates additional layers are added. This process is accompanied by a number of structural transitions necessary to maintain a high packing fraction under the given boundary conditions. Besides the well-known sequence of hexagonal and quadratic phases, we observe two new phases which are identified with the buckling and the rhombic phase recently predicted by other authors.

Wavelet analysis of human photoreceptoral response

2010

Feature detection of biomedical signals is crucial for deepening our knowledge of the physiological phenomena giving rise to them. To achieve this aim, even if many analytic approaches have been suggested only few are able to deal with signals whose features are time dependent, and to provide useful clinical information. In this work we use the wavelet analysis to extract peculiarities of the early response of the photoreceptoral human system, known as a-wave ERG-component. The analysis of the a-wave features is important since this component reflects the functional integrity of the two populations of photoreceptors, rods and cones whose activation dynamics are not well known. Moreover, in …

Functional analysis of Normal and CSNB a-wave ERG component

2009

The features of a-wave of the human electroretinogram are one of the more debated problems in electrophysiology since the a-wave reflects the functional integrity of the two photoreceptoral populations (rods and cones). Although different models concerning the contributions of the early photoreceptoral response are available in current literature, a fully comprehensive theory is difficult to formulate because of the large amount of individual photoreceptors. We study the kinetics of the photoreceptoral response through the analysis of the a-wave shape both in healthy and in patients affected by the Congenital Stationary Night Blindness, that interests the rod population only. The physiologi…
