Assessment of Muscular Fitness as a Predictor of Flight Duty Limitation.

2018

Introduction The high acceleration (Gz) exposure among military pilots flying fighter aircraft has been associated with an increased risk for cervical and lumbar disorders. It has been suggested that an adequate level of physical performance could reduce the risk of experiencing these disorders. The Finnish Air Force has for several years used aerobic (bicycle ergometer) and muscular fitness tests (battery of five tests) in the selection process of military pilot candidates in order to evaluate their physical fitness level. The aim of the study was to determine if these selection phase tests and anthropometry measures can predispose those individuals who might be at risk of developing sever…

Comparison of CRISPR and marker based methods for the engineering of phage T7

2020

With the recent rise in interest in using lytic bacteriophages as therapeutic agents, there is an urgent requirement to understand their fundamental biology to enable the engineering of their genomes. Current methods of phage engineering rely on homologous recombination, followed by a system of selection to identify recombinant phages. For bacteriophage T7, the host genescmkortrxhave been used as a selection mechanism along with both type I and II CRISPR systems to select against wild-type phage and enrich for the desired mutant. Here we systematically compare all three systems; we show that the use of marker-based selection is the most efficient method and we use this to generate multiple …

The GATA3 X308_Splice breast cancer mutation is a hormone context-dependent oncogenic driver

2019

AbstractAs the catalogue of oncogenic driver mutations is expanding, it is becoming clear that alterations in a given gene should not be lumped into one single class, since they might have different functions. The transcription factorGATA3is a paradigm of this. Here, we address the functions of the most commonGATA3mutation (X308_Splice) which generates a neoprotein that we designate as neoGATA3, associated with good patient prognosis. Based on extensive analyses of molecular and clinical data from approximately 3000 breast cancer patients, supported by mechanistic studiesin vitro, we show that neoGATA3 interferes with the transcriptional programs controlled by estrogen and progesterone rece…

Evaluating a hierarchical approach to landscape-level harvest scheduling

2018

Forest planning at the landscape level has the potential to become a large intractable problem. In Finland, Metsähallitus (the state enterprise that manages federally owned land) creates strategic plans to determine the appropriate harvest level. While these plans are feasible, they are not implementable in practice as the harvests are scattered temporally and spatially. Requiring that harvests be organized both temporally and spatially for practical implementation can result in an intractable problem. Through a hierarchical approach, the problem can be organized into steps in which the intractable problem is broken down into smaller easily solvable parts. As an approximation technique, th…

Optimizing Query Perturbations to Enhance Shape Retrieval

2020

3D Shape retrieval algorithms use shape descriptors to identify shapes in a database that are the most similar to a given key shape, called the query. Many shape descriptors are known but none is perfect. Therefore, the common approach in building 3D Shape retrieval tools is to combine several descriptors with some fusion rule. This article proposes an orthogonal approach. The query is improved with a Genetic Algorithm. The latter makes evolve a population of perturbed copies of the query, called clones. The best clone is the closest to its closest shapes in the database, for a given shape descriptor. Experimental results show that improving the query also improves the precision and complet…

Fuzzy Portfolio Selection Models for Dealing with Investor’s Preferences

2017

This chapter provides an overview of the authors’ previous work about dealing with investor’s preferences in the portfolio selection problem. We propose a fuzzy model for dealing with the vagueness of investor preferences on the expected return and the assumed risk, and then we consider several modifications to include additional constraints and goals.

Impact of decision horizon on post-prognostics maintenance and missions scheduling: a railways case study

2021

International audience; In this paper, we propose a study of the decision horizon duration for rolling stock mission assignment and maintenance planning in a prognostics and health management (PHM) context. The aim is to determine the best decision horizon duration that allows the con- struction of a suitable schedule that assigns railway vehicles to missions and integrates required maintenance operations accord- ing to the current and future health of the vehicles. A genetic algorithm is used to minimize the overall cost of the joint schedule as a function of the decision horizon. The results are compared to three proposed heuristics to study the influence of the resolution method on the d…

Using Genetic Algorithms for Optimizing the PPC in the Highway Horizontal Alignment Design.

2016

Various studies have emphasized the interesting advantages related to the use of new transition curves for improving the geometric design of highway horizontal alignments. In a previous paper, one of the writers proposed a polynomial curve, called a polynomial parametric curve (PPC), proving its efficiency in solving several design problems characterized by a very complex geometry (egg-shaped transition, transition between reversing circular curves, semidirect and inner-loop connections, and so on). The PPC also showed considerable advantages from a dynamic perspective, as evidenced by the analysis of the main dynamic variables related to motion (as well as rate of change of radial accelera…

Exploring Relationships Between Anthropometry, Body Composition, Maturation, and Selection for Competition: A Study in Youth Soccer Players

2021

PurposeThe purpose of this study was to analyze variations of selection for competition between late and early mature players and test the relationships between anthropometry, body composition, maturation, and selection for competition.MethodsSeventy-nine youth soccer players from under-11 to under-14 participated in this study, over 6 months. Body composition and maturity offset were estimated based on anthropometric data collected. Participants were also monitored for their number of matches as starters and time of play accrued in minutes.ResultsMinutes played had large correlation coefficients with maturity offset (r = 0.58), and leg length and sitting height interaction (r = 0.56). Mult…

Magnetic Resonance Spectrobiopsy for Prediction of Isocitrate Dehydrogenase Mutation in Glioma

2020

Despite the existence of multimodal therapy paradigm, high-grade gliomas (HGGs) remain devastating tumors associated with one of the worst prognoses. Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most frequent reported histologic type with a median survival, after surgery and combined treatment with chemotherapy and radiotherapy, ranging from 12 to 16 months. The poor prognosis is due to the lack of therapeutic efficacy of chemical agents and irradiation in hypoxic tumor areas. Experimental studies have investigated several molecules with the aim to counteract several downstream signaling important in tumor progression, unfortunately without conclusive results. Several studies have shown that the extent of res…
