Between Paris and Geneva: Some Remarks on the Approval of the Gallican Confession (May 1559)

2018

The Civil Magistrates of Geneva and the Placement of Pastors in France on the Eve of the First War of Religion (1562)

2017

Abstract This article analyses excerpts from letters sent by French Reformed congregations and politically-engaged Calvinist laymen in 1562. In these dispatches, the churches, lay notables, and local magistrates of Montpellier, Grenoble, Gap, Nîmes, Issoire and Rouen requested pastors to Geneva or thanked the town’s authorities for ministers previously sent there. However, these six letters were not addressed to the Venerable Company of Pastors, but specifically to the syndics and Small Council of Geneva. While the role of the Company in the sending of Geneva-trained pastors to France on the eve of the Wars of Religion is known, the participation of the Republic of Geneva’s political author…

Refugiats i apàtrides. L’asil polític i la protecció internacional a l’Estat espanyol: evolució i impediments

2014

Imprimée de différentes manières: The Gallican Confession and Its Printed Editions (1559?-1561)

2019

This paper analyses the first printed editions of the Gallican Confession (agreed upon at the synod of Paris in May 1559) and formulates a hypothesis on the context in which they were published and disseminated. Analysis is based on abridged editions of the Confession in Latin and in French, printed in Geneva and Strasbourg, and featuring a preface authored by pastor Antoine de Chandieu. Although the ministers assembled in Paris in 1559 promulgated a confession in 40 articles, only 35 articles were included in these editions (which are dated 1559, but were ostensibly printed in the first half of 1560). These editions in 35 articles were abridged versions of the ‘full’ Gallican Confession, a…

Widespread diminishing anthropogenic effects on calcium in freshwaters

2019

Calcium (Ca) is an essential element for almost all living organisms. Here, we examined global variation and controls of freshwater Ca concentrations, using 440 599 water samples from 43 184 inland water sites in 57 countries. We found that the global median Ca concentration was 4.0 mg L−1 with 20.7% of the water samples showing Ca concentrations ≤ 1.5 mg L−1 , a threshold considered critical for the survival of many Ca-demanding organisms. Spatially, freshwater Ca concentrations were strongly and proportionally linked to carbonate alkalinity, with the highest Ca and carbonate alkalinity in waters with a pH around 8.0 and decreasing in concentrations towards lower pH. However, on a temporal…

Pulmonary embolism in an emergency care unit of Southern Italy: Evaluation of predictive factors from clinical history and physical exam

2016

An early diagnosis of pulmonary embolism (PE) improves outcome. Therefore, PE should be diagnosed in Emergency Care Units (ECU) at admission. Clinical algorithms support the clinician in this task, although performance is biased by differences in risk factors prevalent in different populations. The clinical conditions predictive of PE were evaluated in subjects from Southern Italy accessing ECU for dyspnea/chest pain. Retrospective clinical data were obtained by electronic retrieving from a hospital database. Data from 8177 patients (age 18-90 years, 54 with PE) were collected from years 2007-2013. Previous history of PE, thrombosis and/or phlebitis, rheumatic diseases, respiratory failure,…

New approaches on diagnosis and treatment of venous thromboembolism

2014

Summary Pulmonary embolism (PE) and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) are two clinical presentations of venous thromboembolism (VTE) and share the same predisposing factors. In patients admitted to a hospital the rationale use of thromboprophylaxis is based on the high prevalence of VTE amongst hospitalised patients, the adverse consequences of unprevented VTE, and the efficacy of thromboprophylaxis. There is no doubt about the benefit/risk ratio of perioperative venous thromboembolism prophylaxis, but for a safety performance of regional anaesthesia, particularly neuraxial blocks, an appropriate management based on safety intervals suited to the characteristics of the drug is needed. The first st…
