Laparoscopic neuromapping in pelvic surgery: scopes of application.
2013
Background. New developments in intraoperative electrophysiological neuromonitoring for conventional surgery are providing further insights into functional neuroanatomy and nerve-sparing in the minor pelvis. The aim of this study was to open up potential scopes of application in laparoscopy. Methods. Ten patients with different indications for surgery (presacral tumor excision, n = 2; resection rectopexy. n = 2; low anterior rectal resection, n = 2; proctocolectomy. n = 2; abdomino-perineal excision of the rectum, n = 2) were investigated prospectively. The pelvic autonomic nerves were bilaterally mapped by laparoscopic electric stimulation under simultaneous electromyography of the intern…
The impact of using the combined oral contraceptive pill for cycle scheduling on gene expression related to endometrial receptivity.
2014
STUDY QUESTION: Does the combined oral contraceptive pill (COCP) change endometrial gene expression when used for cycle programming? SUMMARY ANSWER: COCP used for scheduling purposes does not have a significant impact on endometrial gene expression related to endometrial receptivity. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Controversy exists around COCP pretreatment for IVF cycle programming as some authors claim that it might be detrimental to the live birth rate. Microarray technology applied to the study of tissue gene expression has previously revealed the behavior of genes related to endometrial receptivity under different conditions. STUDY DESIGN SIZE AND DURATION: Proof-of-concept study of 10 young h…
Female pelvic congenital malformations. Part I: embryology, anatomy and surgical treatment.
2011
This review covers the most important female congenital pelvic malformations. The first part focuses on the embryological development of the urogenital and anorectal apparatus, morphological features, and the diagnostic and surgical approach to abnormalities. Comprehension of the embryological development of the urogenital and anorectal apparatus is essential to understand the morphology of congenital pelvic abnormalities and their surgical treatment. Congenital pelvic malformations are characterized by specific common features; the severity of which often subverts the pelvic morphology completely and makes it difficult to comprehend before surgery. The development of imaging, mainly magnet…
Transobturator suburethral tape in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence: efficacy and quality of life after 5 year follow up.
2013
Abstract Objectives Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is a highly prevalent dysfunction in middle-aged and elderly women. One recent technique places a sub-urethral tape passed through the transobturator foramen. Efficacy and quality of life were assessed after five years of treatment with the transobturator technique in women suffering SUI. This evaluation followed a previous control at the first year post-intervention. Study design Sixty-three women were assessed five years after operation with the transobturator technique. Additionally, twenty-nine women of these women had undergone pelvic floor reconstruction due to different forms of genital prolapse. Quality of life (QoL) was assessed…
Matrix Metalloproteases in Arterial Hypertension and their Trend after Antihypertensive Treatment
2017
Background/Aims: Arterial hypertension is characterized by vascular remodelling, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular complications. Matrix metalloproteases (MPPs) are endopeptidases produced by all the cells present in the vascular wall and are involved in the regulation of the extracellular matrix protein turnover. MMPs contribute to blood vessel formation, remodelling, angiogenesis; whereas an altered expression or activity of MMPs or their tissue inhibitors (TIMPs) results correlated with the development and progression of cardiovascular complications. Methods: We examined the…
Osteoporosis, densidad mineral ósea y complejo CKD-MBD (I): consideraciones diagnósticas
2018
Dog sperm head morphometry: its diversity and evolution
2017
Dogs have been under strong artificial selection as a consequence of their relationship with man. Differences between breeds are evident that could be reflected in seminal characteristics. The present study was to evaluate differences in sperm head morphometry between seven well-defined breeds of dog: the British Bulldog, Chihuahua, German Shepherd, Labrador Retriever, Spanish Mastiff, Staffordshire Terrier, and Valencian Rat Hunting dog. Semen samples were obtained by masturbation and smears stained with Diff-Quik. Morphometric analysis (CASA-Morph) produced four size and four shape parameters. Length, Ellipticity, and Elongation showed higher differences between breeds. MANOVA revealed di…
Retarding Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Progression: A Practical Nutritional Approach for Non-Dialysis CKD
2016
This is a case report on a patient with non-dialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) in whom several nutritional issues are briefly discussed from a practical point of view. The article is accompanied by an editorial published in this Journal in relation to the 2nd International Conference of the European Renal Nutrition working group at ERA-EDTA—“Retarding CKD progression: readily available through comprehensive nutritional management?”— and focuses on several practical topics associated with the nutritional approach for the conservative treatment of non-dialysis CKD. The article is divided into 3 sections—basic nutritional assessment, nutritional targets, and nutritional follow-up in non-di…
Development of certified environmental management in hospital and outpatient haemodialysis units
2015
