Iron replacement therapy in the management of anaemia in non-dialysis Chronic kidney disease patients: Perspective of the Spanish Nephrology Society …

2021

This work presents an update on the management of iron deficiency in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), either with or without anaemia. A review is made of the recommendations of the guidelines for the treatment of iron deficiency in CKD. It also presents new studies on iron deficiency in patients with CKD, as well as new findings about iron therapy and its impact on clinical outcomes.Anaemia is a common complication of CRF, and is associated with a decrease in the quality of life of the patients, as well as an increase in morbidity and mortality. Iron deficiency (absolute or functional) is common in non-dialysis chronic kidney disease patients, and may cause anaemia or a low respo…

Natural history of malignant bone disease in renal cancer: final results of an Italian bone metastasis survey.

2013

BackgroundBone metastasis represents an increasing clinical problem in advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC) as disease-related survival improves. There are few data on the natural history of bone disease in RCC.Patients and methodsData on clinicopathology, survival, skeletal-related events (SREs), and bone-directed therapies for 398 deceased RCC patients (286 male, 112 female) with evidence of bone metastasis were statistically analyzed.ResultsMedian time to bone metastasis was 25 months for patients without bone metastasis at diagnosis. Median time to diagnosis of bone metastasis by MSKCC risk was 24 months for good, 5 months for intermediate, and 0 months for poor risk. Median number of SR…

Cancer Stem Cell Biomarkers Predictive of Radiotherapy Response in Rectal Cancer: A Systematic Review

2021

Background: Rectal cancer (RC) is one of the most commonly diagnosed and particularly challenging tumours to treat due to its location in the pelvis and close proximity to critical genitourinary organs. Radiotherapy (RT) is recognised as a key component of therapeutic strategy to treat RC, promoting the downsizing and downstaging of large RCs in neoadjuvant settings, although its therapeutic effect is limited due to radioresistance. Evidence from experimental and clinical studies indicates that the likelihood of achieving local tumour control by RT depends on the complete eradication of cancer stem cells (CSC), a minority subset of tumour cells with stemness properties. Methods: A systemati…

Three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy in localized carcinoma of prostate: preliminary reports of toxicity in dose-escalation treatment

2007

Purpose Many studies confirmed the evidence of a dose-response relationship in prostate cancer. Escalation of dose using conventional techniques is however limited by rectal tolerance. IMRT and 3D-CRT have been designed to allow dose escalation while not exceeding rectal tolerance. We evaluated the acute and early late tolerance to surrounding organs upon dose escalation from 70 to 78 Gy in 3D-CRT setting, in order to introduce the IMRT process as a routine practice in prostate cancer treatment. Materials and Methods We compared clinical data from 35 patients with localized adenocarcinoma of the prostate, who received 70 Gy within a traditional reconstructed three-dimensional treatment plan…

Association de radiothérapie externe et de curiethérapie pour les cancers de la prostate

2017

International audience; Brachytherapy as sole treatment is standard of care for D’Amico classification low-risk prostate cancer. For intermediate and high-risk patients, brachytherapy can be associated to external beam radiation therapy to better take into account the risk of extracapsular effraction and/or seminal vesicle involvement. Three randomized studies have shown that this association increases freedom from relapse survival compared to exclusive external beam radiation therapy. This benefit is not shown for overall survival. The addition of a hormonal therapy to this association is most likely mandatory for high-risk patients, and needs to be confirmed for intermediate risk patients…

Wikipedia network analysis of cancer interactions and world influence

2019

AbstractWe apply the Google matrix algorithms for analysis of interactions and influence of 37 cancer types, 203 cancer drugs and 195 world countries using the network of 5 416 537 English Wikipedia articles with all their directed hyperlinks. The PageRank algorithm provides the importance order of cancers which has 60% and 70% overlaps with the top 10 cancers extracted from World Health Organization GLOBOCAN 2018 and Global Burden of Diseases Study 2017, respectively. The recently developed reduced Google matrix algorithm gives networks of interactions between cancers, drugs and countries taking into account all direct and indirect links between these selected 435 entities. These reduced n…

Imaging in Prune Belly Syndrome and Other Syndromes Affecting the Urogenital Tract

2018

The absence of the abdominal musculature, urinary tract dilatation, and bilateral undescended testis is known as prune belly syndrome (PBS) (Eagle and Barrett 1950; Greskovich and Nyberg 1988; Williams 1982). The classical syndrome is also known as triad syndrome, Eagle-Barrett syndrome, or abdominal muscular deficiency syndrome. There is a broad spectrum of malformations with severe dilatation of the urinary tract as a consequence of aplasia of the musculature. The pathogenetic mechanism is different from that of dilatation as a consequence of supra- or infravesical obstruction. Some patients with prune belly syndrome have a real obstruction, such as urethral aplasia with oligohydramnios s…

Ultrasound-Guided Intramural Inoculation of Orthotopic Bladder Cancer Xenografts: A Novel High-Precision Approach

2013

Orthotopic bladder cancer xenografts are essential for testing novel therapies and molecular manipulations of cell lines in vivo. Current xenografts rely on tumor cell inoculation by intravesical instillation or direct injection into the bladder wall. Instillation is limited by the lack of cell lines that are tumorigenic when delivered in this manner. The invasive model inflicts morbidity on the mice by the need for laparotomy and mobilization of the bladder. Furthermore this procedure is complex and time-consuming. Three bladder cancer cell lines (UM-UC1, UM-UC3, UM-UC13) were inoculated into 50 athymic nude mice by percutaneous injection under ultrasound guidance. PBS was first injected b…
