WHEN RIGHTS EMBRACE RESPONSIBILITIES. BIOCULTURAL RIGHTS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES AND LOCAL COMMUNITIES
Coinage and Indigenous Populations in Central Sicily
2015
The study of the coins found in the indigenous settlements of Caltanissetta province and the analysis of the related contexts of provenance, have highlighted that in these centers, still in the 4th century BC, the coin was considered a worthless piece of metal and that other bronze objects were used as medium of exchange. It is remarkable the discovery in this territory of three “mixed” hoards, including not only coins, but also of bronze scraps and small fragmentary objects. These elements seem to show a late achievement, among those communities, of an economy based on the exclusive use of coins, that was a peculiar expression of the Greek culture
Monete e spazi sacri: rinvenimenti monetali dai santuari dell’entroterra siciliano
2016
This paper analyzes the coins finds from the sacred area of the indigenous settlements of the Sicilian hinterland. In particular, these coins have been found in sites called Balate, Polizzello, Raffe, Sabucina and Vassallaggi. As, in most cases, the coins are accompanied by the data of excavation, it is possible to make hypotheses about the function carried out the coins within the sacred spaces. It is well known that the coin finds in sacred areas can not be interpreted only as votive offerings, as are also suitable for other readings that only the examination of the context can decode.
Depositi di valore e offerte ponderali per gli dei dalle aree sacre indigene della Sicilia
2021
The study analyzes five hoards from some indigenous centers of Sicily, paying particular attention above all to the methods of deposition and the context of discovery in order to advance reflections on their function and destination. Since these are complexes found in the vicinity or within sacred places, it is however possible to further circumscribe the interpretative possibilities. The scrap metal, in fact, as a form of accumulation of wealth, can act as a votive offering, probably cut to precise weight standards, or as a reserve of value of the sanctuary or even have the function of material used by foundries close to sacred places. Only the analysis of the context of discovery and the …
Contatti culturali, identità e popolamento nel territorio imerese
2016
2020
Despite the devastation produced by centuries of European colonization, Amerindian societies have maintained worldviews and conceptions of humanity which present a great richness, originality and variety. As shown both by Lévi-Strauss (1992) and, in a study perspective closer to Eliade's approach, by Sullivan (1988), they share some common characteristics which it is useful to compare, by difference and analogy, with those of Euro-Western cosmologies. As Viveiros de Castro argued with specific reference to the indigenous cosmologies of the Amazon, the importance of the aspects of relationality of reality, its eminently transformative dynamic nature, the ontological multiplicity of its compo…
The place of livestock in human-nonhuman relationship among the Wayuu
2020
In the ethnology of indigenous LSA, the Wayuu case has always been considered a peculiar one. Among the main features which make difficult to insert it in the comparative debate on indigenous models of sociality and cosmology in this area, one can mention: pristine introduction of cattle raising; maintenance of political semi-autonomy till very recent times; development, already in the colonial period, of forms of social hierarchy based on ownership of livestock and other material goods; articulation of these forms with a system of matrilineal descent groups; interplay among the inclusive character of the descendants of mixed unions and the shifting of the traits selected for marking ethnic…
Endogenous asymmetry and cooperative R&D in linear duopoly with spillovers
2009
In a standard model of R&D followed by linear Cournot competition, firm asymmetry is sustainable as equilibrium with non cooperative R&D if and only if the productivity of research is sufficiently large relative to the benefits of imitation. Increasing spillovers distribute R&D results among asymmetric competitors, causing price, firm asymmetry, and joint profit to reduce. With zero spillovers, a symmetric joint lab dominates asymmetric R&D competition in terms of social welfare and consumer surplus, but is sometimes dominated in terms of joint profit. Raising spillovers encourage symmetric collusion but makes the latter potentially harmful to consumers. (JEL : C72; L13; O32).
Tracing the anthropocene back and forward: Rights for ecosystem services, local communities, and REDD
2020
The author of the book When Rights Embrace Responsibilities. Biocultural Rights and Conservation of the Environment replies to the comments raised by Francesco Viola and Gianfrancesco Zanetti in the present journal issue. She also dwells on some topics of her book which deserve further clarification and speculates on possible future developments of biocultural rights.
When Rights Embrace Responsibilities
2018
The conservation of environment and the protection of human rights are two of the most compelling needs of our time. Unfortunately, they are not always easy to combine and too often result in mutual harm. This book analyses the idea of biocultural rights as a proposal for harmonizing the needs of environmental and human rights. These rights, considered as a basket of group rights, are those deemed necessary to protect the stewardship role that certain indigenous peoples and local communities have played towards the environment. With a view to understanding the value and merits, as well as the threats that biocultural rights entail, the book critically assesses their foundations, content, an…
