Morphological and molecular evidence for interspecific hybridisation in the introduced African genusCrassocephalum(Asteraceae: Senecioneae) in Asia

Abstract The genus Crassocephalum in Asia, introduced there from Africa, was examined by extensive field work, herbarium studies, analyses of pollen and seed fertility, chromosome counts and ITS and trnL‐F sequencing. We found that Crassocephalum in Asia comprises two species and their interspecific hybrid. The two species are C. crepidioides (Benth.) S. Moore and C. rubens (Juss. ex Jacq.) S. Moore, of which the latter is a new record for Asia (north Thailand). The hybrid between these two species in north Thailand originated from a cross between C. crepidioides (2n = 40) as female and C. rubens (2n = 40) as male parent.

AbstractSince the nineteenth century, the western European endemic Meconopsis cambrica has been regarded as the only European representative of the genus Meconopsis Vig. This genus, which is otherwise restricted to the Himalayas, differs from Papaver in having a style rather than a stigmatic disc. A phylogenetic reconstruction using 65 internal transcribed spacer sequences of 62 taxa of Old World Papaveroideae and three outgroup taxa shows that M. cambrica is not the closest relative of the remainder of Meconopsis but rather the closest sampled relative of Papaver s.str. The inducibility of UDP-glucosyltransferase activities towards the exogenous substrates 1-naphthol and 2-naphthol and the endogenous metabolite xanthurenic acid was demonstrated in Drosophila melanogaster Meigen larvae and adults using phenobarbital as an inducer. In adults, a 3.5-fold increase of glucosyltransferase activity toward xanthurenic acid and a 2.0-fold increase of the activity toward exogenous substrates (1-naphthol and 2-naphthol) was found. For the first time, the study of the fossil record present in laminated bituminous dolostones from the San Chils locality, lower Miocene in age (ca. 19 Ma), located at the Ribesalbes-Alcora Basin, is addressed. The identification of 11 families and three genera belonging to six insect orders (Orthoptera, Thysanoptera, Hemiptera, Coleoptera, Hymenoptera and Diptera) has been carried out. Furthermore, ephippia of ladoceran crustaceans, one bird feather, vertebrate coprolites and plant remains have been found. The investigation of the Late Paleogene to Late Neogene species of rissoid gastropod Galeodinopsis in the Euro-Mediterranean area has supported the hypothesis that this genus is an intermediate form between two well-known rissoids, Alvinia and Manzonia. We recognized four species of Galeodinopsis: G. biangulata, G. germanica sp. nov., G. semperi (new name for Rissoa duboisii), and G. tiberiana. The oldest (very Late Eocene/Oligocene) representatives of Galeodinopsis, G. biangulata, and G. semperi, share similar shell shape and microsculpture with Alvinia. Several Jurassic pterioid bivalve species have been referred to Parainoceramus Cox by different authors, yet this has proved inadequate because the meaning of such genus has been compounded by nomenclatural and idiomatic problems, as well as misinterpretations. Hence, the new genus Parainoceramya is here proposed to accommodate several species previously referred to Parainoceramus, with Crenatula ventricosa J. de C. Sowerby as its type. Permian species originally assigned to Parainoceramus, including the type species, are referred to the genus Kolymia Likharev. Abstract We estimated a multigenic molecular phylogeny and reconstructed biogeographic history for the European harvestman genus Ischyropsalis C.L. Koch 1839 (Dyspnoi). To reconstruct historical biogeographic patterns we conducted an algorithmic VIP analysis which revealed patterns consistent with a vicariance-dominated history. The existing morphology-based systematic framework for Ischyropsalis is mostly inconsistent with molecular phylogenetic results, and a new informal system is established that recognizes three main clades and several sub-clades. A New Polyploid Species of the Genus Tragopogon (Asteraceae, Cichorieae) from Russia

ABSTRACT Tragopogon soltisiorum Mavrodiev (Asteraceae, Cichorieae, Scorzonerinae) is described as a new species. The new species is a tetraploid (2n = 24), ruderal plant with long flowering and fruiting times and differs from the vast majority of Tragopogon L. species in its ability to reproduce vegetatively from adventitious shoots. The new species is known only from southern Russia and is found in two varieties—a typical variety and a new variety latifolius Mavrodiev.
