Evaluation of quasi-geoid model based on astrogeodetic measurements: case of Latvia
2021
Abstract Since the development of GNSS techniques, the determination of a precise quasi-geoid model has become even more actual. In terms of this project the staff of the Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformatics (GGI) has developed a new quasi-geoid model based on DFHRS (Digital Finite-element Height Reference Surface) approach additionally using astrogeodetic measurements – vertical deflections (VD), which can be observed by a Digital zenith camera. This paper evaluates a quasi-geoid model results based on vertical deflections, as a study area using the territory of Latvia: the standard deviation of the solution is equal to 0.006 m with observation residuals after the adjustment of minimum …
Software development and its description for Geoid determination based on Spherical-Cap-Harmonics Modelling using digital-zenith camera and gravimetr…
2017
Over several years the Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformatics (GGI) was engaged in the design and development of a digital zenith camera. At the moment the camera developments are finished and tests by field measurements are done. In order to check these data and to use them for geoid model determination DFHRS (Digital Finite element Height reference surface (HRS)) v4.3. software is used. It is based on parametric modelling of the HRS as a continous polynomial surface. The HRS, providing the local Geoid height N, is a necessary geodetic infrastructure for a GNSS-based determination of physcial heights H from ellipsoidal GNSS heights h, by H=h-N. The research and this publication is dealing…
CHANGING THE NATIONAL HEIGHT SYSTEM AND GEOID MODEL IN LATVIA
2016
According to the decision of IAG Reference Frame Sub-commission for Europe (EUREF) the EVRF2007 solution as the vertical reference has to be deployed in EU countries. The new height system LAS-2000,5 had been enacted as the European Vertical Reference System‘s EVRF2007 realization in Latvia and the new geoid model LV‘14 had been introduced by Latvian authority Latvian Geospatial Information Agency. However, the appreciation of the quality of quasi-geoid model LV‘14 is rather contradictious among the users in Latvia. The independent estimate and comparison of the two Latvian geoid models developed till now has been performed by the Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformatics. Previous geoid model…
Digital zenith camera of the University of Latvia
2016
Design of digital zenith camera in Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformatics of the University of Latvia started in 2009. Now, after tests of a prototype, improvements of design and manufacturing of the second version, it has reached operational status. The paper describes construction of camera, features of it‘s control software. Vertical deflection determination results are discussed.
Geoid effects in a convecting system with lateral viscosity variations
1992
The geoid signal and the flow patterns of two-dimensional steady state convection models with exponential temperature- and depth dependent viscosity are compared with results for an equivalent stratified viscosity structure. In analogy to Richards and Hager [1989], the latter are computed by a “dynamic response” approach. The flow fields obtained with this approach are quite different from the full solution; the geoid signals are similar but the amplitudes differ significantly. The differences are analysed in the horizontal wavenumber domain and in the spatial domain. They may lead to an overestimation of the viscosity contrast of the earth's mantle derived by modeling the earth's geoid wit…
Development of the One Centimeter Accuracy Geoid Model of Latvia for GNSS Measurements
2015
There is an urgent necessity for a highly accurate and reliable geoid model to enable prompt determination of normal height with the use of GNSS coordinate determination due to the high precision requirements in geodesy, building and high precision road construction development. Additionally, the Latvian height system is in the process of transition from BAS- 77 (Baltic Height System) to EVRS2007 system. The accuracy of the geoid model must approach the precision of about ~1 cm looking forward to the Baltic Rail and other big projects. The use of all the available and verified data sources is planned, including the use of enlarged set of GNSS/levelling data, gravimetric measurement data and…
Digital Zenith Cameras Results and Its Use in DFHRS v.4.3 Software for Quasi-Geoid Determination
2017
The design of digital zenith camera was started in 2010 by Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformatics. Since then the prototype of digital zenith camera has been developed. Now, after improvements of design and manufacturing of the second version, it has reached operational status. This paper describes the construction of zenith camera and features of its control software. The results of vertical deflections' measurements are discussed. At the moment measurements are done in Riga region and are used in DFHRS v.4.3 software in order to check and improve local quasigeoid model. It is a new method of quasigeoid model determination and has not been used in Latvia before. DFHRS (Digital Finite Elem…
Lithosphere Structure, Heat Flow, Gravity, and Other Geoparameters in Central Europe
1991
To clarify structure and evolution of Central European lithosphere, an approach is taken which combines several methods: multivariate statistical data analysis and modelling of data sets, as geology, crustal structure, seismic travel times, heat flow, gravity, geoid heights, topography, vertical motions and unloading affects.
DFHRS-based computation of quasi-geoid of Latvia
2013
In geodesy, civil engineering and related fields high accuracy coordinate determination is needed, for that reason GNSS technologies plays important role. Transformation from GNSS derived ellipsoidal heights to orthometric or normal heights requires a high accuracy geoid or quasi-geoid model, respectively the accuracy of the currently used Latvian gravimetric quasi-geoid model LV'98 is 6–8 cm. The objective of this work was to calculate an improved quasi-geoid (QGeoid) for Latvia. The computation was performed by applying the DFHRS software. This paper discusses obtained geoid height reference surface, its comparisons to other geoid models, fitting point statistics and quality control based…
First considerations on post processing kinematic GNSS data during a geophysical oceanographic cruise
2021
<p class="Abstract">Differential GNSS positioning on vessels is of considerable interest in various fields of application as navigation aids, precision positioning for geophysical surveys or sampling purposes especially when high resolution bathymetric surveys are conducted. However ship positioning must be considered a kinematic survey with all the associated problems. The possibility of using high-precision differential GNSS receivers in navigation is of increasing interest, also due to the very recent availability of low-cost differential receivers that may soon replace classic navigation ones based on the less accurate point positioning technique. The availability of greater plano…
