Durability of a strach-based biodegradable polymer
2007
Abstract The photo-oxidation and the photo-stabilization of a commercial biodegradable polymer have been investigated in order to establish the possibility of using this polymer as raw material for films for agriculture. The degradation has been followed by measuring the mechanical properties as a function of photo-oxidation time and in particular by following the elongation at break. The virgin polymer, made from maize starch and a synthetic biodegradable polyester, shows poor resistance to the UV irradiation as observed by the fast decay of the elongation at break, but the presence of small amounts of conventional UV stabilizers strongly improves the durability of this polymer. The UV sta…
Polymer mechanical recycling: downcycling or upcycling?
2004
Recycled plastics are considered as materials with physical, mechanical and aesthetic properties worse than the virgin ones. In fact, this is true because degradation during lifetime and during the recycling operations changes the structure and the morphology of the polymers and then the final properties of the secondary material. Several “strategies” are under investigation, and in some cases also applied, in order to avoid further degradation during recycling and, if possible, to repair the macromolecules broken during lifetime and then to restore or to improve the initial properties. In this paper the more important techniques, already used in industry or under investigation, according …
Testing of a constitutive equation for entangled networks by elongational and shear data of polymer melts
1973
An entangled network such as a polymer melt or a concentrated solution is here described by a set of two simultaneous equations. One of them is a balance of entanglements, the other gives the stress in the classical form of aMaxwell equation.
Evaluation of interfacial shear strength by tensile tests of impregnated flax fiber yarns
2011
Adhesion of flax fibers and polymer matrix as well as mutual bonding of elementary fibers in a technical fiber are among the principal factors governing the mechanical response of flax fiber-reinforced polymer–matrix composites. A method for evaluation of adhesion is proposed based on tension tests of impregnated fiber yarns, with subsequent characterization by optical microscopy of length distribution of fibers pulled out of the yarn fracture surfaces. An elementary probabilistic model is derived relating aspect ratio distribution of the pulled-out fibers to the fiber tensile strength distribution and the effective interfacial shear strength (IFSS). The method was applied to flax fiber/vi…
Visible polarized light transmission spectroscopy of the electro-optic switching behaviour of surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal cells
1991
Abstract We present in this paper an experimental and theoretical modelling study of the switching characteristics and electro-optic behaviour of chevron surface stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystal cells with planar (low pre-tilt) and non-planar (high pre-tilt) surface conditions. The visible polarized light transmission spectra were taken of the cells with glass plates coated with films of either rubbed polymer or obliquely evaporated silicon monoxide (SiO) at various applied voltages and in various stages of switching and compared with the theoretical values calculated numerically based on our director-polarization structure model for the aforementioned cells. The results provide evid…
Copolyamides from adipic and truxillic acids: Synthesis and characterization by direct pyrolysis in the mass spectrometer
1977
The synthesis of a series of polyamides and copolyamides containing α-truxillic and adipic units in the chain is reported. The thermal degradation of these polymers was investigated by direct pyrolysis in the ion source of a mass spectrometer. Thermal degradation reactions were followed directly by this method by detecting the thermal- and electron-impact-induced fragments. The results obtained show a good correlation between the intensity of mass peaks characteristic of truxillic and adipic moieties and the composition of the copolyamides, as ascertained by elemental analysis. This is an important result since it shows the potential of the direct pyrolysis method in the analysis of copolym…
The non-isothermal rheological behaviour of molten polymers: Shear and elongational stress growth of polyisobutylene under heating
1981
Data of stress growth under both shear and elongational kinematics have been taken in presence of heating temperature ramps on a commerical polyisobutylene.
Biogeochemical evaluation of historical sediment contamination in the Gulf of Palermo (NW Sicily): Analysis of pseudotrace elements and stable isotop…
2012
Abstract Sedimentary biogeochemical data from the Gulf of Palermo, which borders one of the major urban and industrial areas of the central Mediterranean, provide a decennial–centennial-scale record of the effects of human activity on this coastal environment. In this study we report trace elements (TE), C org /N tot ratios, δ 13 C org , and δ 15 N tot from dated ( 210 Pb) sediments collected in two coastal stations variably influenced by urban/fluvial loadings and illegal dumping and we compare them with published data for offshore sediments, in order to investigate at a large spatial scale the influence of on-land activities on sedimentary marine system. TE were generally low except for H…
Thallium geochemistry in the metamorphic Lengenbach sulfide deposit, Switzerland: Thallium-isotope fractionation in a sulfide melt
2014
The Lengenbach (Switzerland) Pb-As-Tl-Zn deposit was formed from a sulfide melt at about 500 °C during Alpine metamorphism, but details on its formation and especially the source of the metals are still under debate. In this study we present two sample sets to address these questions: 1. MC-ICP-MS analyses of thallium isotopes in sulfides, sulfosalts, and melt inclusions from the Alpine metamorphic Lengenbach deposit in the Binn Valley of Switzerland, the non-metamorphic Wiesloch Mississippi Valley-type deposit in Southern Germany, and the Cu- and As-rich mineralization at Pizzo Cervandone about 2 km SW of the Lengenbach deposit, which has been discussed as potential source of the Lengenbac…

Phase diagrams were calculated for flowing solutions of polystyrene in trans-decahydronaphthalene assuming that the energy (Es) stored in the sheared state has to be added to the Gibbs energy of mixing; Es is computed from viscometric data (flow curves). The resulting phase diagrams exhibit two maxima in most of the cases instead of only one for the stagnant solutions. A comparison with experimental data (Part 1) shows that the calculated demixing behaviour agrees well for moderate shear rates and concentrations of the polymer. Deviations in the semidilute region, particularly for higher values, are a consequence of the fact that so far no reliable theoretical relation has been given for th…
