The 2013 FLEX—US Airborne Campaign at the Parker Tract Loblolly Pine Plantation in North Carolina, USA

2017

The first European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA collaboration in an airborne campaign to support ESA’s FLuorescence EXplorer (FLEX) mission was conducted in North Carolina, USA during September–October 2013 (FLEX-US 2013) at the Parker Tract Loblolly Pine (LP) Plantation (Plymouth, NC, USA). This campaign combined two unique airborne instrument packages to obtain simultaneous observations of solar-induced fluorescence (SIF), LiDAR-based canopy structural information, visible through shortwave infrared (VSWIR) reflectance spectra, and surface temperature, to advance vegetation studies of carbon cycle dynamics and ecosystem health. We obtained statistically significant results for fluorescence…

Comparison of Crop Trait Retrieval Strategies Using UAV-Based VNIR Hyperspectral Imaging.

2021

Hyperspectral cameras onboard unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have recently emerged for monitoring crop traits at the sub-field scale. Different physical, statistical, and hybrid methods for crop trait retrieval have been developed. However, spectra collected from UAVs can be confounded by various issues, including illumination variation throughout the crop growing season, the effect of which on the retrieval performance is not well understood at present. In this study, four retrieval methods are compared, in terms of retrieving the leaf area index (LAI), fractional vegetation cover (fCover), and canopy chlorophyll content (CCC) of potato plants over an agricultural field for six dates duri…

A Robust and Simple Measure for Quality-Guided 2D Phase Unwrapping Algorithms

2016

Quality-based 2D phase unwrapping algorithms provide one of the best tradeoffs between speed and quality of results. Their robustness depends on a quality map, which is used to build a path that visits the most reliable pixels first. Unwrapping then proceeds along this path, delaying unwrapping of noisy and inconsistent areas until the end, so that the unwrapping errors remain local. We propose a novel quality measure that is consistent, technically sound, effective, fast to compute, and immune to the presence of a carrier signal. The new measure combines the benefits of both the quality-guided and the residue-based phase unwrapping approaches. The quality map is justified from the two diff…

Hydraulic conductivity and strength of pervious concrete for deep trench drains

2019

Abstract Pervious concrete for deep trench drains, used to stabilise slopes, must meet many requirements, namely, adequate hydraulic conductivity, adequate shear strength a few days after pouring, capacity to act as a protective filter for soils in which the drain is installed, good resistance to clogging and adequate residual hydraulic conductivity. In current engineering practice, the composition of pervious concrete for drains is improperly selected according to criteria used for no-fines concrete for road pavements. To detect more suitable and specific criteria, a laboratory investigation has been conducted aimed at identifying the composition and the properties of pervious concrete sat…

Centrifuge tests on strip footings on sand with a weak layer

2017

Tests on small-scale physical models of a strip footing resting on a dense sand bed containing a thin horizontal weak soil layer were carried out at normal gravity (1 g ). The results, reported in a companion paper, point out that the weak layer plays an important role in the failure mechanism and the ultimate bearing capacity of the footing if it falls within the ground volume relevant to the behaviour of the sand–footing system. The same problem was also investigated by means of centrifuge tests on reduced-scale models at 25 g and 40 g . The results of these tests, reported and discussed in this paper, confirm that failure mechanisms are governed substantially by the presence of the weak…

Comparison of MODIS and Landsat-8 retrievals of Chlorophyll-a and water temperature over Lake Titicaca

2016

Chlorophyll-a concentration ([Chl-a]) and Lake Surface Temperature (LST) were retrieved in Lake Titicaca (Peru-Bolivia) using MODIS and Landsat-8 images. The lake was chosen as a case-study for evaluating the feasibility of Landsat-8 images for [Chl-a] and LST monitoring in oligotrophic and mesotrophic water bodies. The big size of the lake and its spatial and temporal variability, allowed the comparison of MODIS and Landsat-8 products for a wide range of [Chl-a] and LST. The atmospheric correction of the images was facilitated by the very high altitude of the lake. MODIS images were processed with standard ocean color algorithms whereas for Landsat-8, specific algorithms were tested and va…

Chlorophyll Concentration Retrieval by Training Convolutional Neural Network for Stochastic Model of Leaf Optical Properties (SLOP) Inversion

2020

Miniaturized hyperspectral imaging techniques have developed rapidly in recent years and have become widely available for different applications. Combining calibrated hyperspectral imagery with inverse physically based reflectance models is an interesting approach for estimating chlorophyll concentrations that are good indicators of vegetation health. The objective of this study was to develop a novel approach for retrieving chlorophyll a and b values from remotely sensed data by inverting the stochastic model of leaf optical properties using a one-dimensional convolutional neural network. The inversion results and retrieved values are validated in two ways: A classical machine learning val…

Multitemporal Monitoring of Plant Area Index in the Valencia Rice District with PocketLAI

2016

Leaf area index (LAI) is a key biophysical parameter used to determine foliage cover and crop growth in environmental studies in order to assess crop yield. Frequently, plant canopy analyzers (LAI-2000) and digital cameras for hemispherical photography (DHP) are used for indirect effective plant area index (PAI(eff)) estimates. Nevertheless, these instruments are expensive and have the disadvantages of low portability and maintenance. Recently, a smartphone app called PocketLAI was presented and tested for acquiring PAI(eff) measurements. It was used during an entire rice season for indirect PAI(eff) estimations and for deriving reference high-resolution PAI(eff) maps. Ground PAI(eff) value…

Crack growth in fillet welded steel joints subjected to membrane and bending loading modes

2020

Abstract The present paper presents the results from extensive studies of the fatigue damage evolution in fillet welded steel joints subjected to Constant Amplitude (CA) stress under membrane and bending loading modes. The welded joints in question are F class details (category 71) with plate thicknesses ranging from 25 to 32 mm. The steel quality is a medium strength carbon manganese steel. Crack growth histories for the shallow semi-elliptical shaped cracks emanating from the weld toe are obtained by an Alternating Current Potential Drop (ACPD) technique. These growth histories are presented in detail and modelled by Linear Elastic Facture Mechanics (LEFM). The calculations follow the rec…

Comparison of Metrics for the Classification of Soils Under Variable Geometrical Conditions Using Hyperspectral Data

2008

International audience; The objective of this letter is to find a distance metric between reflectance spectra that is not sensitive to the variations on the soil reflectance induced by the geometry of solar-view angles. This is motivated by the fact that differences between spectra measured for the same soil under different observation and illumination configurations can lead to misclassifications. Using 26 soils of different compositions simulated with Hapke’s model and 92 soils of different compositions measured under 28 solarview angle geometries in laboratory conditions, we tested three metrics, namely, root-mean-square error, spectral angle mapper, and R2 (the coefficient of determinat…
