The natural stable isotope values of different primary sources have been used to trace the fate of organic carbon that enters in the marine food webs of Stagnone di Marsala (Italy). Water and sediment samples were collected monthly (March 1996 – February 1997) at 3 stations, characterized by different amounts of vegetal cover and analysed to determine total organic matter (OM), phytopigments, biopolymeric organic carbon (BPC) and stable carbon isotopic composition (δ13C), the latter measured also in main primary producers. Dynamics of sediments along with their core properties in the Monastir-Bekalta coastline (Tunisia, Central Mediterranean)

International audience; The authors report on two campaigns of high-resolution samplings along the shores of Monastir Bay in Tunisia: the first being a study of sediment dynamics, grain size and mineral composition in surface sediment, and the second, eight months later, using four sediment cores to study grain-size distribution in bottom sediments. Particle size analysis of superficial sediment shows that the sand in shallow depths is characterized by S-shaped curves, indicating a certain degree of agitation, possible transport by rip currents near the bottom and hyperbolic curves illustrating heterogeneity of sand stock. Subglacial to proglacial depositional environments in an Ordovician glacial tunnel valley, Alnif, Morocco

Abstract This paper presents the sedimentary analysis of an exceptional Ordovician glacial tunnel valley in the eastern part of the Anti-Atlas. The valley infill comprises two major glacial erosion surfaces (striated pavements) each overlain by a fining-upward glacial unit. These units are composed of five distinct facies associations, recording the evolution from subglacial to proglacial environments, and an additional sixth facies association, overtopping the tunnel valley infill, and associated with post-glacial environments. Does porewater or meltwater control tunnel valley genesis? Case studies from the Hirnantian of Morocco.

Submarine deposits from pumiceous pyroclastic density currents traveling over water: An outstanding example from offshore Montserrat (IODP 340)

© 2016. Geological Society of America. All right reserved. Pyroclastic density currents have been observed to both enter the sea, and to travel over water for tens of kilometers. Here, we identified a 1.2-m-thick, stratified pumice lapilli-ash cored at Site U1396 offshore Montserrat (Integrated Ocean Drilling Program [IODP] Expedition 340) as being the first deposit to provide evidence that it was formed by submarine deposition from pumice-rich pyroclastic density currents that traveled above the water surface. <p>The La Fossa cone of Vulcano Island (Aeolian Archipelago, Italy) is a closed conduit volcano. Today, Vulcano Island is characterized by sulfataric activity, with a large fumarolic field that is mainly located in the summit area.
