An expanded model and application of the combined effect of crystal-size distribution and crystal shape on the relative viscosity of magmas

International audience; This study examines the combined effect of crystal-size distributions (CSD) and crystal shape on the rheology of vesicle free magmatic suspensions and provides the first practical application of an empirical model to estimate the relative effect of crystal content and CSD's on the viscosity of magma directly from textural image analysis of natural rock samples in the form of a user-friendly texture-rheology spreadsheet calculator. PHYSICS-based retrieval of scattering albedo and vegetation optical depth using multi-sensor data integration

Vegetation optical depth and scattering albedo are crucial parameters within the widely used τ-ω model for passive microwave remote sensing of vegetation and soil. A multi-sensor data integration approach using ICESat lidar vegetation heights and SMAP radar as well as radiometer data enables a direct retrieval of the two parameters on a physics-derived basis. The crucial step within the retrieval methodology is the calculus of the vegetation scattering coefficient KS, where one exact and three approximated solutions are provided. Magmas near the critical degassing pressure drive volcanic unrest towards a critical state

During the reawaking of a volcano, magmas migrating through the shallow crust have to pass through hydrothermal fluids and rocks. The resulting magma–hydrothermal interactions are still poorly understood, which impairs the ability to interpret volcano monitoring signals and perform hazard assessments. Here we use the results of physical and volatile saturation models to demonstrate that magmatic volatiles released by decompressing magmas at a critical degassing pressure (CDP) can drive volcanic unrest towards a critical state. Combined ground and aerial measurements resolve vent-specific gas fluxes from a multi-vent volcano

Volcanoes with multiple summit vents present a methodological challenge for determining vent-specific gas emissions. Here, using a novel approach combining multiple ultraviolet cameras with synchronous aerial measurements, we calculate vent-specific gas compositions and fluxes for Stromboli volcano. Emissions from vent areas are spatially heterogeneous in composition and emission rate, with the central vent area dominating passive emissions, despite exhibiting the least explosive behaviour.
