Mercury content and speciation in the Phlegrean Fields volcanic complex: evidence from hydrothermal system and fumaroles

2009

Abstract Mercury is outstanding among the global environmental pollutants of continuing concern. Although degassing of active volcanic areas represents an important natural source of mercury into the atmosphere, still little is known about the amount and behaviour of Hg in volcanic aquifers, especially regarding its chemical speciation. In order to assess the importance of mercury emissions from active volcanoes, thermal waters were sampled in the area surrounding La Solfatara, Pozzuoli bay. This is the most active zone of the Phlegrean Fields complex (coastal area north–west of Naples), with intense hydrothermal activity at present day. Studied groundwaters show total Hg (THg) concentratio…

An Overview of the Hypogene Caves of Sicily

2017

Karst in Sicily develops in both Messinian gypsum and Mesozoic or Tertiary limestone rocks. Caves are also found in the basalts of Mount Etna. Except for some rare cases, until recently most caves developed in limestone were considered to be of epigenetic origin. The discovery of gypsum in some of these caves, and especially detailed morphological studies, have allowed defining a hypogenic origin for a dozen of caves up to now. In some of these, the hypogenic evidences are very clear, while others remain in doubt because of the widespread presence of well-developed condensation-corrosion morphologies not necessarily related to hydrothermal fluids. This paper reports the present knowledge of…

Investigation of the He solubility in H2O-CO2 bearing silicate liquids at moderate pressure: a new experimental method

2000

We have designed the first available experimental method capable to investigate the solubility of inert gases in H2O–CO2 bearing silicate melts in a large range of pressures. The method overcomes the difficulties imposed by the physical state of volatiles at room conditions. Experiments were done by using an internally heated pressure vessel, where sealed capsules containing the sample are introduced. The peculiarity of the method consists in the capability of loading, in accurately known proportions (even lower than ppm), volatiles in a gaseous state at room conditions. Gas is loaded as a weighed amount of a gas-bearing glass, which was previously prepared by using the same gas as a pressu…

The dynamics of slug trains in volcanic conduits: Evidence for expansion driven slug coalescence

2017

Strombolian volcanism is a ubiquitous form of activity, driven by the ascent and bursting of bubbles of slug morphology. Whilst considerable attention has been devoted to understanding the behaviour of individual slugs in this regime, relatively little is known about how inter-slug interactions modify flow conditions. Recently, we reported on high temporal frequency strombolian activity on Etna, in which the larger erupted slug masses were followed by longer intervals before the following explosion than the smaller bursts (Pering et al., 2015). We hypothesised that this behaviour arose from the coalescence of ascending slugs causing a prolonged lag before arrival of the next distinct bubble…

Tectono-metamorphic evolution of the pre-Athabasca basement within the Wollaston-Mudjatik Transition zone, Saskatchewan

2016

The Paleoproterozoic tectono-metamorphic evolution of the pre-Athabasca basement (∼1.7 Ga) within the Wollaston–Mudjatik Transition Zone (WMTZ) (Saskatchewan, Canada) has been characterized using both exposed basement and drill cores from the Wolly–McClean exploration drilling project. The finite ductile strain pattern of the WMTZ results from the superposition of two tectono-metamorphic events M1–D1 and M2–D2. M1–D1 is associated with the development of a gently dipping foliation striking N90°–N100° and a southward decrease in peak pressures from up to 10 kbar (1 kbar = 100 MPa) in the Cochrane River area down to 6 kbar in the Wolly–McClean exploration drilling project. The M2–D2 event is…

Archaeological excavation confirms the geophysical anomalies recorded at the cathedral of tarragona - A comparative study

2011

An integrated geophysical survey was conducted in September 2007 at the Cathedral of Tarragona to search for archaeological remains of the Roman temple dedicated to the Emperor Augustus. Many hypotheses about its location have been put forward, the most recent ones suggesting it could be inside the present cathedral. A project including Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and Ground probing radar (GPR) was planned for a year and conducted during a week of intensive field survey. Both ERT and GPR provided detailed information about subsoil structures. Different ERT techniques and arrays were used, ranging from standard Wenner-Schlumberger 2D sections to full 3D electrical imaging using t…

Fracture stratigraphy and oil first migration in Triassic shales, Favignana Island, western Sicily, Italy

2021

This study aims at evaluating the control exerted by fracture stratigraphy and diagenetic processes on oil first migration through an outcropping, mixed carbonate-siliciclastic succession. The present work included results of sedimentological, paleontological, mineralogical, petrographic, structural, and microstructural analyses carried out on organic-rich shales exposed at the Favignana Island of Sicily, Italy. The analyses focus on Upper Triassic yellowish siltstones and greyish laminated dolomitic limestones, which form a 10's of m-thick succession exposed along the westernmost portion of the Sicilian fold-and-thrust belt. The studied succession deposited in a coastal lagoon associated t…

Contribution of HVSR measures for seismic microzonation studies

2018

The HVSR method applied to seismic noise can be a very useful technique to map the site effects of the territory, to identify the thickness of the soft covering and so the depth of the seismic bedrock. The case of the urban area of Oliveri is presented. Because of its high seismic hazard this area has been subject of first level seismic microzonation. The town lies on a large coastal plain made of mixed fluvial/marine sediments, overlapping a deformed substrate. In order to identify points on the area probably suffering of relevant site effects and to define a preliminary Vs subsurface model, 23 HVSR measurements were performed. A clustering technique of continuous signals has been used to …

Electrical resistivity and induced polarization tomographies to test the efficiency and safety of the new landfill of Bellolampo (Palermo, Italy)

2016

A geophysical study by means of electrical resistivity and induced polarization tomographies was carried out in the landfill site of Bellolampo (Palermo, Italy) to check the integrity of the landfill liner and to detect possible leachate plumes. Preliminarily, synthetic tests were performed, simulating acquisition data along profiles placed above resistivity distribution, suitable to represent landfills protected with an high-density polyethylene (HDPE) liner at the bottom or with possible leachate plumes. Optimized array data sets for parallel measurements have been tested in order to assess the resolution and the effectiveness of tomographic images, comparing inversions with and without t…

Mineralogical variability of Callovo-Oxfordian clays from the Paris Basin and the Subalpine Basin.

2006

High-resolution clay mineralogical data at the Middle/Upper Jurassic boundary from the French Subalpine Basin, the Jura Mountains and the Paris Basin (ANDRA boreholes) from Callovo-Oxfordian clayey deposits allow spatial and temporal terrigenous flux evolution to be considered over a period of 6 to 7 Myr. Recorded diachronisms of major mineralogical changes and complex clays distribution at the Paris Basin scale result to combined palaeogeographic/eustatic variations and climate input. In the French Subalpine Basin, mineralogical homogeneity confirms the burial diagenesis influence, but other terrigenous supplies must be involved in contrast to the Paris Basin domains. Volcanogenic clays (b…
