Claudie, un "rurodrame" de George Sand
2006
This article examines a theatrical work of George Sand, Claudie, performed the 11th January 1851 on the theatre of Porte Saint Martin in Paris. The analysis concentrates at first on the modalities of writing of this theatre, and secondly on the relation of the famous novelist with the dramatic art, for which she had a great passion but the processes of which she did never come out very well. Claudie was successful for the large audience but the critics were more cautious. The play, all the same, marks a renewal of theatrical art for which George Sand will be always a careful promoter.
Positional goods and social welfare: a note on George Pendleton Watkins’ neglected contribution
2018
Watkins's analysis of adventitious utility contains many aspects that are connected to the contemporary debate on positional goods. First, Watkins adventitious utility emerges from a process of social exclusion and can create negative externalities, in the sense that positive consumption of one individual implies negative consumption by another individual. Not only it creates negative externalities on other individuals, but it can initiate a race-to-the-bottom, where individuals waste an increasing amount of money on goods which do not possess any real utility.

Despite impressive scholarly solidity—or rather because of this—The Bloomsbury Handbook to Studying Christians makes me think of a large bag of goodies and the delight of plunging into it, allowing...

AbstractStudies of material objects in the field of memory studies have followed diverse epistemological and disciplinary trajectories, but their shared characteristic has been the questioning of philosophical assumptions concerning human relations with inanimate things and lower-level organic objects, such as plants, within the Aristotelian hierarchy of beings. Rather than accept at face value their categorizations as passive or deficient in comparison to the human subject, critical scholarship has reformulated the place and role of nonhuman entities in culture. This essay examines the nexus of materiality and memory in the work of the French philosopher and art historian Georges Didi-Hube…
Rappresentazioni vertiginose. Tre esempi: Perec, Lequeu, Douat
2022

Adeus a Georges Moustaki
2013
"I felt as if I was faced with a French Honecker" : The French Communist Party Confronted with a World that was Falling Apart (1985-1991)
2019
International audience; At the end of the 1980s, Mikhail Gorbachev met Georges Marchais, the general secretary of the PCF (Parti communiste français, i.e. French Communist Party), leader of one of the most important Western communist parties. After the meeting with Marchais, Andrei Gratchev, Gorbachev’s political advisor, remarked: “I felt as if I were faced with a French Honecker. He didn’t listen to what we told him. The new direction taken by Moscow didn’t seem to interest him.” Fundamentally, confronted with Gorbachev’s reforms, the PCF leadership expressed a lot of skepticism. Initially, they seemed interested but it became rapidly clear that they were, in fact, quite critical of the S…
Pius X, Merry del Val and the cases of Alfred Loisy and George Tyrrell
2018
During the modernist crisis the various institutions and persons within the Roman Curia acted in a complex manner. The article explores the different agencies and ways of repression by reconstructing the Roman treatment of the ‘cases’ of the French theologian Alfred Loisy (1857-1940) and the Anglo-Irish Ex-Jesuit George Tyrrell (1861-1909).
