The "intimate enemies": Edward Dowden, W. B. Yeats and the formation of character

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Nordic Journal of English Studies. Also available from the publisher at: http://ojs.ub.gu.se/ojs/index.php/njes/article/view/2917 Open Access Stung by Edward Dowden's reluctance to endorse the Irish Literary Revival, W. B. Yeats distanced himself publicly from the TCD Professor. This act of distancing has largely been accepted by subsequent scholarship as a reflection of Dowden's lack of influence on Yeats. Despite obvious disagreements on some key points, this essay will argue that Yeats is close to Dowden on a number of issues, by tracing their intimate dialogue about the writings of George Eliot, Shakespeare and Goethe. The concept of forma…

The 'terroridiom' principle between spoken and written discourse

2008

This paper focuses on phraseology used within the domain of politics, both in written and spoken discourse. We concentrate on the lemma TERROR and on the recurrent sequences in which it is embedded, reflecting how native speakers, both American and British, tend to use it in preferred environments making routinized blocks of language. The data come from two corpora: the spoken corpus includes speeches of George W. Bush and Tony Blair, and the written corpus is made up of articles from The Wall Street Journal and The Economist. Since text is nothing but phraseology of one kind or another (Sinclair 2008), our attempt here is to uncover which of the two varieties lends itself more willingly to…

'No speech at my command will fit the forms in my mind': Shaping the Spiritual through Writing and Typing in George MacDonald’s Lilith Manuscripts

2020

International audience; In “Lilith B” (1893), the most extensively rewritten draft of George MacDonald’s fantasy novel Lilith (1895), puzzling triangular-shaped insertions, some handwritten and some typed, although not retained in the later versions of the text, allow for a better understanding of the creative process and show how the material crafting of the manuscript, through collage and combination techniques, played a part in the invention of fantasy. The introduction of the typewriter as a new drafting tool in MacDonald’s writing habits, not only for copying but also for revising, corresponds to a shift in the metaphorical and allegorical system which enables the parallel worlds of th…

"Florentine Nights", or domesticating "Romola": The forgotten Polish translation of George Eliot's novel

2019

The paper discusses an anonymous Polish translation of George Eliot’s 1863 novel Romola, published in the late nineteen-twenties by the Edward Wende publishing house. The Polish version, which appeared with the title Noce florenckie (Florentine Nights) and a photo of Lilian Gish on the cover, may be seen as an early case of a movie tie-in. The discussion focuses on the domesticating strategies used by the Polish translator, who paid attention only to the elements that move the personal story of Romola, Tito and Tessa forward, and removed most of the elements that deal with the history and culture of Renaissance Florence. As a result, the translation becomes a highly simplified paraphrase th…

Deletion mapping on chromosome 10p and definition of a critical region for the second DiGeorge syndrome locus (DGS2)

1998

DiGeorge syndrome (DGS) is a developmental field defect, characterised by absent/hypoplastic thymus and parathyroid, and conotruncal heart defects, with haploinsufficiency loci at 22q (DGS1) and 10p (DGS2). We performed fluorescence in situ hybridisations (FISH) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analyses in 12 patients with 10p deletions, nine of them with features of DGS, and in a familial translocation 10p;14q associated with midline defects. The critical DGS2 region is defined by two DGS patients, and maps within a 1 cM interval including D10S547 and D10S585. The other seven DGS patients are hemizygous for both loci. The breakpoint of the reciprocal translocation 10p;14q maps at a dist…

Clinical features and follow-up in patients with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome

2014

Objective To investigate the clinical manifestations at diagnosis and during follow-up in patients with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome to better define the natural history of the disease. Study design A retrospective and prospective multicenter study was conducted with 228 patients in the context of the Italian Network for Primary Immunodeficiencies. Clinical diagnosis was confirmed by cytogenetic or molecular analysis. Results The cohort consisted of 112 males and 116 females; median age at diagnosis was 4 months (range 0 to 36 years 10 months). The diagnosis was made before 2 years of age in 71% of patients, predominantly related to the presence of heart anomalies and neonatal hypocalcemia. In…

United with the United States : George Bush's foreign policy towards Europe 1989-1993

2009

Jumppanen on tutkimuksessaan löytänyt kolme keskeistä argumentaatiostrategiaa, joiden avulla Yhdysvaltojen poliittinen johto edisti tarkoitusperiään Euroopassa. Bushin hallinnon ensimmäinen argumentaatiostrategia korosti Yhdysvaltojen r…
