Presbyphagia and dysphagia in old age

2020

Although presbyphagia is a clinically relevant problem among elderly population, possibly leading to dysphagia in old age, it remains a still underestimated health condition. The present review analyzes swallowing related anatomical and functional changes during aging, both in healthy people and in those affected by dysphagia. First of all, dysphagia in old people must not be confused with presbyphagia. To distinguish these two different conditions, a correct definition of both should be considered. Subsequently, a comprehensive evaluation including instrumental analysis should be carried out. The aim of this narrative review is to analyze the current knowledge of this clinical condition an…

Screening for Cognitive Impairment in Hospitalized Older Patients

2021

Abstract. This study develops a screening method for older patients based on nursing procedure to predict complications associated with cognitive impairment during a hospital stay. This multicenter diagnostic cohort study among older hospitalized patients was carried out in eight primary-care hospitals. Following admission of the patients, trained nurses conducted a structured interview and the Mini-Cog as gold standard for cognitive status; complications during the hospital stay were also monitored. In a second step, the structured interview combined with the Mini-Cog revealed whether there was any abnormality in the interview, making it possible to validly and reliably as well as sensiti…

Oral microcirculation in post-menopause: a possible correlation with periodontitis

2011

doi: 10.1111/j.1741-2358.2011.00608.x Oral microcirculation in post-menopause: a possible correlation with periodontitis Objectives:  The reduction in the level of oestrogen, typical in menopause, has some effect on the health of the oral cavity. In fact, post-menopausal women present more severe periodontal disease than pre-menopausal women. Numerous factors can be held to be responsible for this increase, among which are the effects of oestrogens on the oral epithelium, on the salivary glands, on bone tissue and on the endothelium. Our double blind study aims to evaluate the possible variations in oral microcirculation in post-menopausal women. Methods:  Twenty-seven women in post-menopau…

Family Caregivers' Experiences in Nursing Homes: Narratives on Human Dignity and Uneasiness

2013

This qualitative study focused on dignity in nursing homes from the perspective of family caregivers. Dignity is a complex concept and central to nursing. Dignity in nursing homes is a challenge, according to research. Family caregivers are frequently involved in their family members’ daily experiences at the nursing home. Twenty-eight family caregivers were included in this Scandinavian cross-country, descriptive, and explorative study. A phenomenological-hermeneutic approach was used to understand the meaning of the narrated text. The interpretations revealed two main themes: “One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself” and “Uneasiness due to indignity.” Dignity wa…

The Teacher's Perspective in Older Education: The Experience of Teaching in a University for Older People in Spain

2010

The aim of this study was to explore university lecturers' descriptions of their teaching experience with older students. Twelve teachers of the Nau Gran (a university program for older people [UPOP] in Valencia, Spain) were interviewed. We analyzed their responses to questions about their experience of teaching older adults, the rewarding aspects of that experience and the teaching strategies they used. Teachers described their experience as extremely positive and rewarding, and often contrasted the active, interested, and grateful older students with the relatively passive regular younger students. The teachers also mentioned how they adapted their teaching to suit a more motivated and pa…

Lipoprotein profile and high-density lipoproteins: subfractions distribution in centenarians.

1998

In order to assess the role of HDL on longevity, we studied HDL subfraction distribution in centenarian women compared with a group of weight- and gender-matched healthy normolipidemic controls. We did not find any significant difference in the mean plasma lipid, apolipoprotein, and Lp(a) levels. On the contrary, in spite of similar HDL-cholesterol concentrations (1.32 ± 0.41 mmol/l in centenarians vs. 1.32 ± 0.25 mmol/l in controls, p = not significant), HDL2b and HDL3a levels were, respectively, significantly increased and significantly reduced in centenarians in comparison with controls (HDL2b 32.4 ± 9.2% in centenarian…

Intervención coactiva en el mercado: procesos, modalidades y efectos

2021

Developing Böhm-Bawerk’s (1914) Macht oder ökonomisches Ge-setz, we characterize the different intervention modalities as coercive «fixing» of prices, goods (quantities or modes of performing) or persons, also with their effects. Given that the subjective but real forces underlying market processes respond with effects which are opposite to those pursued, the «intervener» or controller would be induced to an in crescendo «fixing» of more and more as-pects of reality. We also show fractional reserve (banking) as another kind of intervention, since it produces or induces the same effects, including a call to implement monopolistic schemes.
Key words: Market Process, Böhm-Bawerk, Interve…
