Disclosure of duplicative studies: damned if you don't

Duplicative publication requires duplicative editorializing. There are many forms of lesser redundancy such as unacknowledged secondary analyses of randomized clinical trials, fragmentation of studies with concurrent submission to various journals, and serial updating of observational studies. These practices result in publication bias. We have revised our instructions to authors to include disclosure of similar articles that are published, in press, or submitted to other journals to the editors upon submission.
Outcome after mitral valve operations with depressed left ventricular function.

We retrospectively investigated 42 patients (27 men, 15 women; mean age, 67 years) with severe mitral valve incompetence and endstage cardiomyopathy (ejection fraction <30%) who were operated on between January 2002 and March 2009. Of these, 14 were in New York Heart Association class IV, and 27 were in class III. The etiology was ischemic in 18 patients and idiopathic dilated in 24. Mitral valve repair was performed in 25 patients, and 17 had mitral valve replacement. The mean logistic EuroSCORE was 33.41. The mean follow-up was 44.52 months. There were no perioperative deaths. MRI of the lung using hyperpolarized helium as an inhaled contrast agent has important research applications and clinical potential. Owing to the limited availability of hyperpolarized helium, this type of imaging has not been performed in the human lung outside of North America or Europe. Lung cancer is the most common cancer-related death worldwide. In Germany it accounts for 25% of cancer deaths in men, and 14% in women. The aim of this study is to provide an overview of 5-year relative survival by sex, age, histology, and tumour stage in Germany representing a population of 26.7 million people.The study is based on a pooled German dataset including data from 12 population-based cancer registries covering around one third of the German population.
