New Ulota species with multicellular spores from southern South America

2012

Abstract Two new Ulota species with multicellular spores, Ulota billbuckii and U. streptodon, are described from southern Chile. The new species are usually found growing together and sometimes forming mixed cushions or mats on different trees, with a preference for Nothofagus betuloides and N. antarctica. The new Ulotae are easily differentiated from each other as well as from other Ulota species with multicellular spores by a set of sporophytic traits including two very uncommon peristome configurations. In this paper, both species are described, and the differences between them as well as from other Ulotae with similar endosporic germination, and from superficially similar species, is di…

Recovering Genetic Resources of Some Legume Species of Latvian Origin by Plant Tissue Culture

2013

Accessions with no germinating seeds are a common problem in plant gene banks and research institutions. Our goal was to elaborate and apply an in vitro method of germination and multiplication of old aged seeds of red and alsike clover and alfalfa. Eighteen clover and five alfalfa accessions were used for germination in vitro. Most of the accessions had produced seeds more than 20 years ago and the seeds did not germinate in soil. Seed pre-treatment with different concentrations of potassium permanganate, as well as addition of phytohormones, AgNO3 and activated carbon to germinating media were tested. Plantlets for all germinated accessions were obtained, even in the case when seeds were …

Intracellular acid stress inhibits plant growth by unknown mechanisms and it occurs in acidic soils and as consequence of other stresses. In order to identify mechanisms of acid toxicity, we screened activation-tagging lines of Arabidopsis thaliana for tolerance to intracellular acidification induced by organic acids. A dominant mutant, sbt4.13-1D, was isolated twice and shown to over-express subtilase SBT4.13, a protease secreted into endoplasmic reticulum. Activity measurements and immuno-detection indicate that the mutant contains less plasma membrane H+-ATPase (PMA) than wild type, explaining the small size, electrical depolarization and decreased cytosolic pH of the mutant but not orga…

Ecotoxicity of halloysite nanotube–supported palladium nanoparticles in Raphanus sativus L

2015

Halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) are natural nanomaterials that are biocompatible and available in large amounts at low prices. They are emerging nanomaterials with appealing properties for applications like support for metal nanoparticles (NPs). The potential environmental impacts of NPs can be understood in terms of phytotoxicity. Current research has been focusing on HNT applications in cell or animal models, while their use in plants is limited so their ecotoxicological impact is poorly documented. To date there are no studies on the phytotoxic effects of functionalized halloysites (functionalized-HNTs). To develop a quantitative risk assessment model for predicting the potential impact of H…

POLLEN MORPHOLOGY AND REPRODUCTIVE PERFORMANCES IN OPUNTIA FICUS-INDICA (L.) MILL.

2015

The fruits of Opuntia ficus-indica (L.) Mill., the most worldwide cultivated species of Cactaceae family, contain viable seeds (100-250) of large size. This characteristic influences the commercial quality of the fruit. The study of floral biology in Opuntia allows to understand the behaviour of the plant during reproductive phase and perhaps to distinguish clones with different fruits behaviour (with seed and seedless). The study resulted in a palynological characterization by optical and scanning microscopy (SEM), followed by a qualitative analysis on the male line with pollen viability and in vitro germination tests, in addition to a pollen-pistil interaction survey. The plant material c…

Relationship between the seed rain and the establishment of vegetation in two areas abandoned after peat harvesting

1987

In this study the number and species composition of diaspores dispersing into two newly abandoned peat harvesting areas in Finland were investigated. In an area abandoned six years earlier a total of 2978 living seeds m−2, representing 18 species, was captured by using water-filled traps during two summers. In a one-year-old succession area the total number of living seeds m−2 was 2241, representing 16 plant species. The soil seed banks were found to be empty of viable seeds. In neither area there appeared to be any relation between number of dispersing seeds and of plant individuals of the same species in the pioneer vegetation. It is suggested that unfavourable conditions on the soil surf…

Chemical Composition and Possible in Vitro Phytotoxic Activity of Helichrsyum italicum (Roth) Don ssp. italicum

2011

The chemical composition of the essential oil of Helichrysum italicum (Roth) Don ssp. italicum, collected in the National Park of Cilento and Diano Valley, Southern Italy, was studied by means of GC and GC/MS. Forty four compounds of 45 constituents were identified in the oil, mainly oxygenated sesquiterpenes. The essential oil was evaluated for its potential in vitro phytotoxic activity against germination and early radicle elongation of radish and garden cress. The radicle elongation of radish was significantly inhibited at the highest doses tested, while germination of both seeds was not affected.

Effect of Gibberellin on Mature Euonymus europaeus L. Seeds

1992

The release from dormancy of Euonymus europaeus L. embryos by a brief treatment with GA 3 has been studied. During 48 h incubation of dormant embryos in GA-free medium, phospholipid levels increased at first, then declined sharply over the last 6 h. When the embryos were placed in GA, medium during this 6 h period levels of total phospholipids as well as of phosphatidylethanolamine increased whilst phosphatidylinositol and phosphatidylcholine declined slightly
