Effects of Resistance Training of Peripheral Muscles versus Respiratory Muscles in Institutionalized Older Adults with Sarcopenia: A Randomized Contr…
2018
This study compares the effects of two resistance training programs in peripheral and respiratory musculature on muscle mass and strength and physical performance, and identify the appropriate muscle mass parameter for assessing the intervention effects. Thirty-seven institutionalized older Spanish adults with sarcopenia were analyzed: Control Group (n=17), Respiratory Muscle Training Group (n=9) and Peripheral Muscle Training Group (n=11). Pre and post-intervention, participants were assessed for Appendicular Skeletal Mass (ASM/height2; ASM/weight; ASM/BMI), isometric knee-extension, arm-flexion and handgrip strength, Inspiratory and Expiratory Maximal Pressures (MIP and MEP), and gait spe…

Kihon Checklist to assess frailty in older adults: Some evidence on the internal consistency and validity of the Spanish version
2021
Aim The aim of this study was to assess the internal consistency, hypothesis testing and criterion-related validity of the Spanish versions of the Kihon Checklist (KCL) - the original 25-item and reduced 15-item versions - for screening frailty in community-dwelling older adults. Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out between March and September 2018 in Valencia province (Spain). A sample of 251 participants was recruited. Construct validity was assessed using four different frailty instruments, and alternative measures corresponding to the KCL domains (handgrip strength, gait speed, the Short Physical Performance Battery, skeletal muscle mass index, physical activity level, functi…
Improving a Measure of Mobility-Related Fatigue (The Mobility-Tiredness Scale) by Establishing Item Intensity
2013
Objectives To improve the construct validity of self‐reported fatigue by establishing a formal hierarchy of scale items and to determine whether such a hierarchy could be maintained across time (aged 75–80), sex, and nationality. Design Cohort study. Setting Two Nordic urban locations: Jyväskylä, Finland, and Glostrup, Denmark. Participants Baseline (1989/90) consisted of a random sample of citizens of Finland or Denmark born in 1914 (n = 837). At 5‐year follow‐up, excluding those lost to follow‐up and with baseline disability resulted in a sample of n = 690. Measurements The Mobility‐Tiredness (Mob‐T) Scale is a six‐item scale that requires subjects to self‐report on whether they become ti…

Study of the leisure influence on attitude for leisure and mental health in a sample of portuguese seniors
2017
Increased human longevity has been attributed to technological and medical advances, as well as improved hygiene and nutritional conditions, access to health care, changes in eating habits and cognitive development strategies (Osório, 2007). The present study examined the influence of leisure actions in the psychological well-being, leisure attitude and distress of seniors. The sample consisted of 403 participants (37,2% male; 62,8% female). Concerning the perception of health condition, 82,6% subjects were considered independent and 17,4% participants were considered dependent. The instruments used were the MHI (Ribeiro, 2001) and the LAS (Freire & Fonte, 2007). Main results exposed that p…

Effects of Physical and Cognitive Training on Falls and Concern About Falling in Older Adults : Results From a Randomized Controlled Trial
2022
Abstract Background The aim of this study is to investigate whether combined cognitive and physical training provides additional benefits to fall prevention when compared with physical training (PT) alone in older adults. Methods This is a prespecified secondary analysis of a single-blind, randomized controlled trial involving community-dwelling men and women aged 70–85 years who did not meet the physical activity guidelines. The participants were randomized into combined physical and cognitive training (PTCT, n = 155) and PT (n = 159) groups. PT included supervised and home-based physical exercises following the physical activity recommendations. PTCT included PT and computer-based cogniti…
