Public Administration and the Study of Political Order: Towards a Framework for Analysis

The contribution of this study is two-fold: First, it outlines a conceptual framework on political order; and secondly, it offers empirical illustrations on the case of Nordic cooperation. Taken together, the article makes a plea for public administration scholarship in the study of political order. Political order consists of a relatively stable arrangement of institutions that are fairly formalized and institutionalized. A common political order, moreover, entails that relevant institutions: (i) are fairly independent of pre-existing institutions; (ii) are relatively integrated and internally cohesive; and (iii) are reasonably able to influence governance processes within other institutio…

Carbonates from the ancient world's longest aqueduct:A testament of Byzantine water management

The fourth‐ and fifth‐century aqueduct system of Constantinople is, at 426 km, the longest water supply line of the ancient world. Carbonate deposits in the aqueduct system provide an archive of both archaeological developments and palaeo‐environmental conditions during the depositional period. The 246‐km‐long aqueduct line from the fourth century used springs from a small aquifer, whereas a 180‐km‐long fifth‐century extension to the west tapped a larger aquifer. Although historical records testify at least 700 years of aqueduct activity, carbonate deposits in the aqueduct system display less than 27 years of operation. Mollīna tipogrāfijā nodrukātas Orationes tres: trīs runas, ko turēja sholarhi (Rīgas rātes prokonsuls Nikolajs Eke; 1541-1623 un sindiks Dāvids Hilhens; 1561-1610) un Domskolas rektors Johans Rīvijs (Rivius, 1528-1596, Domskolas rektors (1589) un inspektors (1594)) reorganizētās Domskolas atjaunošanai veltītajā svinīgajā pasākumā 1589. gada 15. jūlijā. Vairāki grāmatas eksemplāri bija domāti dāvināšanai ievērojamām Rīgas personām, tāpēc iesieti grezni: brūnā ādā, ar Rīgas ģerboni zelta iespiedumā uz vāka.
