Musicological theories traditionally address the expressive powers of music within a framework of signification, in which musical affect is considered as a meaningful musical gesture. Consequently, affect is regarded as a property of the music instead of as a bodily reaction of the listener. I will outline a different conception of musical affect that takes into account the bodily nature of perception. I will introduce the notion of sonic stroke, i.e. a sound that induces affect in the listener. A sonic stroke thus is responsible for the occurrence of musical affect. The purpose of this chapter is to study children’s engagement with mathematics in kindergarten mediated by digital tools within the context of interactive whiteboard (IWB). Our study reports from a research project aiming at analysing in what ways digital tools may nurture children’s appropriation processes relative to mathematics. In adopting a sociocultural perspective on learning and development, observations together with video recordings have been analysed. Kindergarten children's argumentation in reflection symmetry: The role of semiotic means

International audience; In this paper I investigate the characteristics of children's argumentation when they work with reflection symmetry. Using Toulmin's (2003) model for substantial argumentation, I illuminate structural aspects of the ongoing argumentation. In addition, I analyse the children's argumentation with respect to their use of semiotic means. Results show that children are able to argue for a claim in a quite complex manner. The study also illustrates the extensive use of semiotic means in children's argumentation. In this work a software architecture is presented for the automatic recognition of human arm poses. Our research has been carried on in the robotics framework. A mobile robot that has to find its path to the goal in a partially structured environment can be trained by a human operator to follow particular routes in order to perform its task quickly. The system is able to recognize and classify some different poses of the operator's arms as direction commands like "turn-left", "turn-right", "go-straight", and so on. Predicting mid-air gestural interaction with public displays based on audience behaviour

Abstract Knowledge about the expected interaction duration and expected distance from which users will interact with public displays can be useful in many ways. For example, knowing upfront that a certain setup will lead to shorter interactions can nudge space owners to alter the setup. GIFs in online interaction: embodied cues and beyond

International audience; Recent research has characterized GIFs as a means for speakers to reproduce nonlinguistic cues such as bodily actions and facial expressions in online written interaction, which is first and foremost text-based. They make it possible to translate in digital interaction what those nonlinguistic cues enable to do in face-to-face conversation: express emotion and affect, and elaborate on what is being said. This article explores further the role and functions of GIFs as embodied cues and goes beyond, where GIF use diverges from body language in face-to-face conversation.
