Earlier appearance of the ossification center of the femoral head in breast-fed versus formula-fed infants

2011

Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate possible differences in the rate of appearance of the femoral head ossification center (FHOC) in infants according to the type of feeding (exclusive breast-feeding, formula, mixed feeding). Methods A retrospective study was conducted in a population of 285 healthy infants who consecutively underwent echographic evaluation of the hip as a screening for hip dysplasia from April 1 through October 31, 2008. For each infant, type of feeding, sex, gestational age, weight at birth, and age at the time of echographic examination were recorded. Data analysis was performed in the entire sample population and in a subpopulation of 143 infants af…

Incidence, Trends, and Survival of Children With Embryonal Tumors.

2015

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system (CNS) and non-CNS embryonal tumors occur principally in children and are rarely seen in adults. The incidence rates for rare entities such as atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors (AT/RT) or primitive neuroectodermal tumors in the CNS are rarely published. Incidence rates for certain subgroups, such as hepatoblastomas, have been increasing in some countries. METHODS: Data of 8337 embryonal tumors, registered in children (0–14 years) between 1991 and 2012 (for AT/RT 2000–2012) in the population-based German Childhood Cancer Registry with complete national coverage were analyzed for incidence rates, time trends, and survival. RESULTS: For most entities, the inc…

Paracetamol and antibiotics in childhood and subsequent development of wheezing/asthma: association or causation?

2011

Background Several studies found an association between early administration of paracetamol and antibiotics and development of wheezing. This could be due to confounding: wheeze and asthmatic symptoms in early childhood are difficult to distinguish from respiratory tract infections that are widely treated with these drugs; in case of persistence of symptoms up to school age, this could explain the observed relationship. Methods We investigated the association between paracetamol and antibiotics use in the first year of life and wheezing phenotypes, i.e. wheezing starting in different time periods (early, persistent and late-onset) in the SIDRIA-2 study, a cross-sectional survey of 16,933 ch…

Prevalence of microcephaly in Europe: population based study.

2016

Objectives: Microcephaly is a congenital anomaly where the baby’s head is smaller than expected when compared with babies of the same sex, age and ethnicity. Many of these babies will have underdeveloped brains. This study aimed to provide contemporary estimates of the prevalence of microcephaly in Europe, determine if the diagnosis of microcephaly is consistent across Europe and to evaluate whether changes in prevalence would be detected using the current European surveillance performed by EUROCAT (the European Surveillance of Congenital Anomalies). Design: A questionnaire and a population-based, observational study Setting: 24 EUROCAT registries covering 570,000 births annually in 15 coun…

Childhood Cancer Risk From Conventional Radiographic Examinations for Selected Referral Criteria: Results From a Large Cohort Study

2011

OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the long-term effects of exposure to diagnostic ionizing radiation in childhood. Current estimates are made with models derived mainly from studies of atomic bomb survivors, a population that differs from today's patients in many respects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed the cancer incidence among children who underwent diagnostic x-ray exposures between 1976 and 2003 in a large German university hospital. We reconstructed individual radiation doses for each examination and sorted results by groups of referral criteria for all cancers combined, solid tumors, and leukemia and lymphoma combined. RESULTS: A total of 68 incidence cancer cases between 1980…

First results of a European multi-center registry of patients with anorectal malformations.

2013

Background: The European consortium on anorectal malformations (ARM-NET) was established to improve the health care of patients and to identify genetic and environmental risk factors. The aim of the present study was to present the first results on clinical data of a large European cohort of ARM patients based on our registry. Methods: In 2010, the registry was established including patient characteristics and data on diagnosis, surgical therapy, and outcome regarding complications. Patients born between 2007 and 2012 were retrospectively added. A descriptive analysis of this cohort was performed. Results: Two hundred and three ARM patients were included. Syndromes or chromosomal abnormalit…

Impact of completeness of ascertainment of minor stroke on stroke incidence: implications for ideal study methods.

2013

Background and Purpose— Reliable comparisons of stroke incidence are important. To determine the impact of systematic assessment of patients referred with transient ischemic attack on the measured incidence and severity of stroke, we compared 2 population-based studies. Methods— Patients with first-ever stroke ascertained during 2006 through 2010 from the Dijon Stroke Registry and the Oxford Vascular (OXVASC) Study were studied. Both studies comply with the criteria for ideal incidence studies, but the OXVASC Study also systematically assessed all patients referred with transient ischemic attack. Stroke severity was measured by the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale. Results— Among…

Temporal trends in the premorbid use of preventive treatments in patients with acute ischemic cerebrovascular events and a history of vascular diseas…

2017

Although secondary prevention in patients with arterial vascular diseases has improved, a gap between recommendations and clinical practice may exist. We aimed to evaluate temporal trends in the premorbid use of preventive treatments in patients with ischemic cerebrovascular events (ICVE) and prior vascular disease.Patients with acute ICVE (ischemic stroke/TIA) were identified through the population-based stroke registry of Dijon, France (1985-2010). Only those with history of arterial vascular disease were included and were classified into four groups: patients with previous coronary artery disease only (CAD), previous peripheral artery disease only (PAD), previous ICVE only, and patients w…
