Determinants of inappropriate hospitalization in cataract surgery in the south of Italy: a retrospective study

2017

Purpose To analyze the frequency of inappropriate hospitalization in cataract surgery and the type of related determinants. Methods A nested retrospective case–control study was carried out on 2708 consecutive cataract surgery patients operated between January 2013 and Decem- ber 2015. All cases with inappropriate hospitalization (day surgery or ordinary hospitalization) were com- pared with a control group of cases treated in an appropriate (day service) regimen. The predictive value for inappropriate admissions to the hospital was assessed using a logistic regression model. Significant variables from the univariate analysis were included in a multivariate model. Results Forty-five cases (…

Poststroke Disposition and Associated Factors in a Population-Based Study

2012

Background and Purpose— The organization of poststroke care will be a major challenge in coming years. We aimed to assess hospital disposition after stroke and its associated factors in clinical practice. Methods— All cases of stroke from 2006 to 2010 were identified from the population-based Stroke Registry of Dijon, France. Demographic features, risk factors, and prestroke treatments were recorded. Admission stroke severity was assessed using the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score. At discharge, we collected dementia, disability using the modified Rankin Scale, length of stay, and hospital disposition (home, rehabilitation, convalescent home, and nursing home). Multivariate…

Smoking Status and Severity of Ischemic Stroke. A Population-Based Study

2013

We aimed to investigate the impact of smoking status on clinical severity in patients with ischemic stroke event (IS). Patients were prospectively identified among residents of the city of Dijon, France (ca. 151,000 inhabitants), using a population-based registry, between 2006 and 2011. Demographic and clinical data were recorded. The initial clinical severity was quantified by the means of the National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS). Multivariable ordinal logistic regression was used to assess the effect of smoking status on severity. Among the 1,056 recorded patients with IS, data about smoking status were available for 973 (92.1%), of whom 658 (67.3%) were non-smokers, 187 (19…

Association between AT C573T polymorphism and cardiovascular risk factors in myocardial infarction.

2011

Abstract Background Polymorphisms in the AT1 gene have been associated with various parameters related to the pathogenesis of cardiovascular diseases and to myocardial infarction. This study analyzed the relationship between two polymorphisms of the angiotensin II AT-1 receptor gene (AT1_1166 and AT1_573) and the risk of ischemic heart disease by studying their association with several cardiovascular risk factors. Methods The sample population comprised 356 subjects: 174 patients who had survived myocardial infarction (61.01±8.15 years), and 182 age- and gender-matched controls (mean age of 60.25±9.43). The polymorphisms of the angiotensin II AT1-receptor gene (C573T and A1166C) were studie…

[Myocardial echocardiography with intracoronary injection of contrast in post-infarction patients. Implications and comparison with angiography and m…

2004

We analyzed the safety and feasibility of myocardial echocardiography with intracoronary injection of contrast, its effect on left ventricular remodeling and systolic function, and its relationship with angiography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the evaluation of post-infarction coronary microcirculation.Thirty patients with a first ST-elevation myocardial infarction and a patent infarct-related artery were studied. Mean perfusion score of the infarcted area was analyzed with myocardial echocardiography. TIMI and Blush grades (angiography) were determined. Mean perfusion score (MRI-perfusion), end-diastolic volume index and ejection fraction were determined with MRI. At 6 months a…

Prognostic Value of Myocardial Ischemia and Necrosis in Depressed Left Ventricular Function: a Multicenter Stress Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Registry

2013

A B S T R A C T Introduction and objectives: The incremental prognostic value of inducible myocardial ischemia over necrosis derived by stress cardiac magnetic resonance in depressed left ventricular function is unknown. We determined the prognostic value of necrosis and ischemia in patients with depressed left ventricular function referred for dipyridamole stress perfusion magnetic resonance. Methods: In a multicenter registry using stress magnetic resonance, the presence ( 2 segments) of late enhancement and perfusion defects and their association with major events (cardiac death and nonfatal infarction) was determined. Results: In 391 patients, perfusion defect or late enhancement were p…

Case Control Study of Neuroblastoma in West-Germany after the Chernobyl Accident

1996

Background To explore possible causes of a 1988 incidence peak of infant neuroblastoma in west German regions which were contaminated with more than 6000 Bq/m2 Cs137 from the Chernobyl accident. The primary working hypothesis was that parents of the diseased children had been contaminated by an excessive intake of locally produced food, especially mushrooms or deer. Design Case control study with 1:2 (cases:controls) matching. Data were collected from the children's parents by questionnaires and telephone interviews. Setting Nation-wide study (former FRG) based on the German Childhood Cancer Registry. Subjects Cases born in 1988 and reported with a neuroblastoma to the registry until March …

Stroke incidence and case fatality: a 9-year prospective population-based study in an elderly population of Bagheria, Italy

2020

Abstract Background The incidence of stroke in high-income countries has been on the decline; however, few epidemiological surveys have been conducted in recent years to specifically estimate the incidence along with outcome of stroke, in Italy. This study aimed to examine the incidence and case fatality rates of stroke in an elderly Italian population. Methods A cohort of 2200 people > 65 years was randomly stratified from the total elderly population of Bagheria, Italy. A 9-year prospective population-based study was performed (19,800 person/years). Results We identified 112 first-ever strokes, 53 females and 59 males: 82 (73.1%) ischemic, 13(11.6%) intracerebral haemorrhages, 6 (5.35%…

Idiopathic neutropenia of infancy: Data from the Italian Neutropenia Registry.

2019

Autoimmune neutropenia of infancy (AIN) is characterized by low risk of severe infection, tendency to spontaneously resolve and typically onset at ≤4-5 years of age; it is due to auto-antibodies whose detection is often difficult. In case of negativity of 4 antineutrophils autoantibody tests, after having excluded ethnic, postinfection, drug induced, or congenital neutropenia, according to the Italian guidelines the patients will be defined as affected by "idiopathic neutropenia" (IN). We describe the characteristics of 85 IN patients enrolled in the Italian neutropenia registry: they were compared with 336 children affected by AIN. The 2 groups were clinically very similar and the main dif…

Prevalence of apical periodontitis and frequency of root canal treatments in liver transplant candidates

2013

Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of apical periodontitis (AP) and endodontic treatment in liver transplant candidates and control healthy subjects. Material and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study. Forty two liver transplant candidates (LTC) (study group) and 42 control subjects. Digital panoramic radiographs where used. Periapical status was scored according to the periapical index (PAI). Results were analysed statistically using the Chi-squared test and logistic regression. Results: Radiographic signs of AP in one or more teeth was found in 79% of patients in the study group and in 50% of control subjects (p = 0.008; OR = 3.7; C. I. 95% = 1.4 - 9.5…
