erman case control study on childhood leukaemia - Basic considerations, methodology and summary of the results

1998

In order to explore potential risk factors of childhood leukaemia, a case control study was performed including all incident cases from 1992 to 1994. The study was based on the German Childhood Cancer Registry. It was restricted to cases from West Germany and extended retrospectively until 1980 for children who were living in regions covered by a previous incidence study on nuclear installations (21). The study was conducted in close correspondence with a preceding case control study in Lower Saxony (13). Results of this study and of others published in the literature were used to define explicit hypotheses for the present study. This paper presents the methodology of the study and gives an…

How the presence of rhinoconjunctivitis and the severity of asthma modify the relationship between obesity and asthma in children 67 years old

2008

Summary Background The association between asthma and obesity in children, and the effect modification of allergy on this association have not been fully established. Aims The objective of the study was to know the effect modification of the severity of asthma and of the coexistence of rhinoconjunctivitis (RC) in the relationship between obesity and asthma. Methods A cross-sectional study of 17145 schoolchildren 6‐7 years old from eight Spanish cities who had completed information on height and weight of the ISAAC phase III questionnaire, which also included questions about asthma and RC symptoms and on various risk factors. Body mass index (BMI) was used to define obesity according to inte…

Incontinence and constipation in adolescent patients with anorexia nervosa : Results of a multicenter study from a German web-based registry for chil…

2019

OBJECTIVE: Nocturnal enuresis (NE), daytime urinary incontinence (DUI), and fecal incontinence (FI) are common disorders in childhood and are frequently accompanied by comorbid psychiatric disorders. Despite a high association between urinary and fecal incontinence with psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders, research on comorbidity between incontinence and anorexia nervosa (AN) remains scarce. Yet, it is well known that somatic consequences of AN include metabolic and gastrointestinal disorders. The study sought to assess the prevalence of incontinence and constipation in children and adolescents with AN and to examine associations of these two symptoms with body weight at admission …

Adjusted population attributable fractions and preventable potential of risk factors for childhood obesity.

2007

AbstractObjectiveA number of individual risk factors for childhood obesity have been identified, but only some of these are amenable to prevention. To assess the amount of cases in a general population attributable to these risk factors, adjusted population-attributable fractions were estimated.DesignCross-sectional study.SettingObligatory school entry examination in 2001/2002 in six Bavarian communities (Germany).Subjects5472 children at age 5–6 years.MeasuresAnthropometric measures were ascertained by public health nurses, and measures concerning sociodemographics, lifestyle and child behaviour such as child's daily meal frequency were obtained with self-administered parental questionnair…

Stroke associated with giant cell arteritis: a population-based study

2014

Background Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is the most common vasculitis in people ≥50 years and can be associated with stroke. We aimed to evaluate the epidemiology and characteristics of stroke in patients with GCA. Methods All patients with a biopsy-proven diagnosis of GCA were identified among residents of the city of Dijon, France (152 000 inhabitants), between 2001 and 2012 using a prospective database. Among these, patients who suffered from stroke were retrieved by crossing data from the population-based Dijon Stroke Registry. Demographics and clinical features were recorded. We considered that the stroke was GCA-related if the stroke revealed GCA or occurred between the onset of symptom…

Variations in acute stroke care and the impact of organised care on survival from a European perspective: the European Registers of Stroke (EROS) inv…

2013

Background The need for stroke care is escalating with an ageing population, yet methods to estimate the delivery of effective care across countries are not standardised or robust. Associations between quality and intensity of care and stroke outcomes are often assumed but have not been clearly demonstrated. Objective To examine variations in acute care processes across six European populations and investigate associations between the delivery of care and survival. Methods Data were obtained from population-based stroke registers of six centres in France, Lithuania, UK, Spain, Poland and Italy between 2004 and 2006 with follow-up for 1 year. Variations in the delivery of care (stroke unit, …

Impact of the Ageing Population on the Burden of Stroke: The Dijon Stroke Registry.

2018

Background: We aimed to evaluate the impact of the ageing population on temporal trends in burden of stroke and to provide projections for the coming years. Methods: Stroke cases (ischemic strokes, spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhages, or undetermined strokes) were prospectively identified between 1987 and 2015 in Dijon, France, using a population-based registry. Age-standardized incidence rates of first-ever and recurrent stroke were calculated, and their temporal trends were assessed using age- and sex-adjusted annual incidence rate ratios (RR). Results: The population of Dij…

Applicability of Echocardiographic Strict Negative Criteria for Suspected Infective Endocarditis.

2021

Echocardiography is the cornerstone imaging technique in the diagnosis of infective endocarditis (IE) but is often misused in clinical practice. Recently, strict negative criteria have been proposed to avoid unnecessary follow-up echocardiograms. We aimed to evaluate the use of echocardiography in real-world clinical daily practice and the usefulness of these criteria in the diagnosis of IE. We retrospectively retrieved every echocardiogram performed in our center for suspected IE between 2014 and 2018, including 905 transthoracic echocardiograms (TTEs). Of these, 451 (49.8%) fulfilled the strict negative criteria (group 1). In this group, IE was seldom diagnosed (n = 4, 0.9%). In 338 patie…

How accurate is the reporting of stroke in hospital discharge data? A pilot validation study using a population-based stroke registry as control.

2012

Population-based stroke registries can provide valid stroke incidence because they ensure exhaustiveness of case ascertainment. However, their results are difficult to extrapolate because they cover a small population. The French Hospital Discharge Database (FHDDB), which routinely collects administrative data, could be a useful tool for providing data on the nationwide burden of stroke. The aim of our pilot study was to assess the validity of stroke diagnosis reported in the FHDDB. All records of patients with a diagnosis of stroke between 2004 and 2008 were retrieved from the FHDDB of Dijon Teaching Hospital. The Dijon Stroke Registry was considered as the gold standard. The sensitivity, …
