AN UNKNOWN TRIBUTE BY FARINELLI TO KING PHILIP V OF SPAIN
2021
ABSTRACTCarlo Broschi, better known as Farinelli, arrived in Madrid on 7 August 1737. King Philip V and his wife Elisabeth Farnese were deeply impressed by his vocal qualities and invited him to remain in their service, on extremely rewarding terms. Although few sources concerning his first months in Spain are available, a newly discovered libretto, L'ombra di Luigi XIV il Grande, sheds light on his position at the Spanish court and his response to the privileged situation he enjoyed. The work is a short solo cantata commissioned by Farinelli and offered to Philip V for his name day in 1738. The title-page indicates Francesco Feo as the composer, but no sources for the musical setting have …

A Telegraph for China: The Attempted Application of Caselli’s Pantelegraph to Transmit Chinese Characters, 1856−87
2016
In 1872 the Shanghai-based newspaper Shenbao described an invention by Giovanni Caselli that allowed the production of telegraphic messages containing Chinese characters, the ‘pantelegraph’, an ancestor of the fax, reproducing manu- scripts, images and symbols, and, as such, totally suitable for Chinese telegraphy. In 1863, the Italian inventor had shown his invention to a legation of Chinese diplomats in France, producing some impressive Chinese transmissions, the caselligrammi. The envoys reported this information back home, but for some reasons a commercial contact was only set twenty years later. Although in many ways this seemed to be a perfectly suitable solution for the telegraphic c…
Study on consumer preferences for quality attributes of fig fruit after storage at room temperature
2021
Fig (Ficus carica L.) is a nutritious fruit, rich in fiber, potassium, calcium, and iron. It is an important source of vitamins, amino acids, antioxidants and phenolic compounds that contribute to a healthy diet. In addition to Asian countries, fig is cultivated in the Mediterranean basin, where quality fruit has been produced since ancient times. Sicily in southern Italy traditionally cultivated ‘San Giovanni’ figs, but fig consumption has decreased. This cultivar is very interesting for its intrinsic qualities and its appreciation after storage by consumers could help its commercialization. The objective of this study is to know consumer preferences for quality attributes of ‘San Giovanni…

The thesis aims to fill a void in the historiographical studies about the artistic and cultural relations between Sicily and Malta. T…
2017
The finding of a rich series of documents in the Archivio Storico of the Istituto Banco di Napoli – Fondazione (Naples) allows to offer a detailed reconstruction of the 1781-1782 season at the Neapolitan Teatro dei Fiorentini, devoted to "commedia per musica". The payments, transcribed in the appendix, show the specific financial structure of the theatre, as well as the distribution of roles and responsibilities among the different figures involved in the operatic business. Archival evidence and information taken from other sources (such as newspapers and letters of contemporary observers) make possible to highlight the Neapolitan debut of the famous Tuscan soprano Celeste Coltellini, desti…
