COOLING RATE DEPENDENCE AND DYNAMIC HETEROGENEITY BELOW THE GLASS TRANSITION IN A LENNARD–JONES GLASS

1999

We investigate a binary Lennard-Jones mixture with molecular dynamics simulations. We consider first a system cooled linearly in time with the cooling rate gamma. By varying gamma over almost four decades we study the influence of the cooling rate on the glass transition and on the resulting glass. We find for all investigated quantities a cooling rate dependence; with decreasing cooling rate the system falls out of equilibrium at decreasing temperatures, reaches lower enthalpies and obtains increasing local order. Next we study the dynamics of the melting process by investigating the most immobile and most mobile particles in the glass. We find that their spatial distribution is heterogene…

Polymer-enforced crystallization of a eutectic binary hard sphere mixture

2010

We prepared a buoyancy matched binary mixture of polydisperse polystyrene microgel spheres of size ratio 0.785 and at a volume fraction of 0.567 just below the kinetic glass transition. In line with theoretical expectations, a eutectic phase behavior was observed, but only a minor fraction of the samples crystallized at all. By adding a short non-adsorbing polymer we enforce inter-species fractionation into coexisting pure component crystals, which in turn also shows signs of intra-species fractionation. We show that in formerly inaccessible regions of the phase diagram binary hard sphere physics is made observable using attractive hard spheres. Ancillary files: Correction to Soft Matter 20…

Isotope effects on the dynamics of a supercooled van der Waals liquid

2000

Deuteron magnetic resonance was used to study three differently isotope-labeled species of the fragile glass-forming liquid ortho-terphenyl. The calorimetric glass transition of the isotope deuterated only at the central phenyl ring is significantly lower than that of the perdeuterated one. It is shown that while the ortho-terphenyl molecule is not as rigid as previously often assumed, its overall reorientation geometry is independent of deuteration. The characteristic jump angles are found to increase with temperature, thus resolving an apparent discrepancy previously noted when comparing typical jump sizes from NMR with other data.

Cooperativity Scaling and Free Volume in Plasticized Polylactide

2019

The authors would like to thank the region Haute Normandie for their financial support and the acquisition of the Broadband Dielectric Spectrometer. R.G. acknowledges U.S. National Science Foundation (Grant no. DMR-1725188) for the acquisition of PAL spectrometer. The experimental evidence of the increase of activation energy associated with the super Arrhenius behavior governing amorphous polylactide by free volume variations has been obtained through a combination of calorimetric, dielectric, and positron annihilation lifetime measurements. The amount of free volume in polylactide was controlled by the amount of acetyltributylcitrate plasticizer in the composition. Plasticization is shown…

Diffusion of oxygen molecules in fluorine-doped amorphous SiO2

2010

Abstract Effects of fluorine doping on the diffusion of interstitial oxygen molecules (O2) in amorphous SiO2 (a-SiO2) were compared to those obtained from a-SiO2 containing SiOH groups. Incorporation of moderate concentration ( ∼ 1 0 19  cm−3) of SiF groups gives rise to minor changes in diffusion parameters between 800 and 1100  ° C: only a slight decrease in solubility and an increase in the activation energy for diffusion can be detected. Incorporation of SiOH groups has similar weak effects on the solubility and activation energy for diffusion. These minor changes are most likely due to the enhancement of the flexibility of local Si–O network as a result of the dissociation of the netwo…

The effect of introduction of montmorillonite clay (MMT) on the elastic properties of polycarbonate (PC) composition with acrylonitrile-butadiene sty…

2015

Abstract Polycarbonate (PC)/acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene terpolymer (ABS)/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites have been obtained by melt compounding in a twin-screw extruder. Structural and elastic properties have been characterized. The theoretical analysis of the elastic properties of PC/ABS/MMT composite with a widely varied number of elementary layers in clay filler particles has been performed in order to estimate the influence of the degree of exfoliation of particles on the effect of reinforcement of the material. Results of the theoretical analysis have been compared with the experimental data about the effects of unmodified and two types of organically modified montmorillonite …

2015

High aspect ratio graphene based fillers with different dimensionalities showed the ability to greatly modify rheological, mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of polymers at very low content. In this work, the effect of filler dimensionality on the multifunctional properties of an epoxy matrix reinforced by both carbon nanotubes (1D) and graphite nanoplatelets (2D) have been investigated across the percolation region. Keywords-- Carbon nanotube, Graphite nanoplatelet, nanocomposites, mechanical properties, ...

Synthesis and Properties of Amine-Cured Epoxy/Organophilic Layered Silicate Nanocomposites

2009

Epoxy-layered silicate composites have been prepared by dispersing an organically modified montmorillonite (Nanofil 919) in an epoxy resin and curing in the presence of an aromatic hardener. Dispersion of the layered silicate within the epoxy matrix was verified using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy revealing that interaction improves upon organic silicate modification. Flexural properties and toughness increase with the organic silicate loading whereas glass transition temperature decreases and thermal stability remains practically unmodified.
