Recombination studies of photodissociated MbCO by Mössbauer spectroscopy at low temperatures

Rebinding of carbonmonoxide to myoglobin after photodissociation has been studied by Mossbauer spectroscopy at 57.6 K and below for up to 9 days. The time dependence is reproduced by a set of exponentials representing a distribution of activation enthalpies. A shift to smaller values of these activation enthalpies and of the preexponential factor compared to optical studies at higher temperatures has been observed as well as pumping into long-living states.
Rayleigh scattering of Mössbauer radiation on a myoglobin single crystal

The RSMR technique was used to determine the fraction of radiation which is scattered elastically and inelastically, respectively, into Bragg reflections of a metmyoglobin single crystal. From this measurement 〈x2 1c〉=0.027±0.008 A2 has been determined which is due to long range correlated motions in analogy to acoustic and optic modes in solids.
Determination of methemoglobin in human blood after ionising radiation by EPR

In the present work presents results of investigations of radiation influence on blood of patients examined by radio-isotopes diagnosis (Tc 99m ), blood of Chernobyl clean-up workers and human blood irradiated by LINAC using Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR). The EPR spectroscopy reveals information on electronic states of transition metal ions, particularly Fe 3+ in different spin states. It is shown that EPR spectra of blood of patients before examination has signal from metal-protein transferrin (g=4.3) and after administration of radio- isotope proves signal of Fe 3+ (methemaglobin) in the high spin state (g=6.0). A phase I/II multicentric trial of gemcitabine and epirubicin in patients with advanced pancreatic carcinoma

Potential synergistic interaction between gemcitabine (GEM) and epirubicin (EPI) in pancreatic cancer have been described previously. The maximum-tolerated dose in this trial was GEM 1000 mg m(-2) and EPI 45 mg m(-2). Median time to progression was 5.1 months and median survival time 7.4 months. This combination appears well tolerated and shows promising clinical activity.

BACKGROUND: Mammaglobin is expressed mainly in mammary tissue, overexpressed in breast cancer (BC) and rarely in other tissue. The aim of this study was to assess the sensitivity and specificity of transcript MGB1 detection and to evaluate the role of MGB1 as potential clinical marker for the detection of disseminated cancer cells in the blood of BC patients. Effects of Recombinant Human Erythropoietin (rHuEPO) on Tumor Control in Patients with Cancer-Induced Anemia

It is well recognized that anemia-induced tumor hypoxia is associated with a reduced sensitivity of tumors to radiation and some forms of chemotherapy. Thus, the correction of lower hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations with recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) can play an essential role by improving tumor oxygenation. Based on evidence from a number of trials, treatment with rHuEPO will effectively ameliorate anemia and improve quality of life. However, one of the most essential prerequisites for achieving this benefit is the use of rHuEPO in agreement with the evidence-based ASCO/ASH-guidelines recommending a target Hb concentration of 12 g/dl (7.44 mmol/l).

Abstract Tumor hypoxia, mostly resulting from poor perfusion and anemia, is one of the key factors in inducing the development of cell clones with an aggressive and treatment-resistant phenotype that leads to rapid progression and poor prognosis. Studies in patients with solid tumors suggest that there is a range of hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations that is optimum for tumor oxygenation. Data from 125 studies describing the pretreatment oxygenation status as measured in the clinical setting using the computerized Eppendorf pO2 histography system have been compiled in this article. Tumor oxygenation is heterogeneous and severely compromised as compared to normal tissue. Hypoxia results from inadequate perfusion and diffusion within tumors and from a reduced O2 transport capacity in anemic patients.
