Abstract Immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) is the most common chronic glomerulopathy with variable clinical manifestations. IgAN diagnostics became possible in Latvia in 2013. The study aim was to describe IgAN manifestations in the Latvian population by analysing epidemiological, clinical, histological data, and reveal factors that might determine the course of the disease. The retrospective, one-centre study included biopsy-proven IgAN patients over a five-year period in the Nephrology Centre at Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital. Congenital nephrosis, mesangial sclerosis, and distinct eye abnormalities with microcoria: An autosomal recessive syndrome

We observed the occurrence of congenital nephrotic syndrome (CNS) and distinct ocular anomalies in two unrelated families. Eleven children from both families presented with a similar course of renal disease starting with nephrotic syndrome and renal failure prenatally or immediately after birth that resulted in death before the age of 2 months. Kidney histopathology showed diffuse mesangial sclerosis (DMS). Clinically obvious eye abnormalities were recognized in six of the eight patients in whom sufficient clinical data were available. The renal involvement of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has been reported. The etiology of kidney injury appears to be tubular, mainly due to the expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2, the key joint receptor for SARS-CoV-2; however, cases with glomerular implication have also been documented. The multifactorial origin of this renal involvement could include virus-mediated injury, cytokine storm, angiotensin II pathway activation, complement dysregulation, hyper-coagulation, and microangiopathy.
