'Glosse in volgare e in latino nei codici anglosassoni’

2012

2021

The Lexikon by Hesychius from Alexandreia (V-VI century) is one of the most important lexicographical works in Ancient Greek. It contains an encyclopedic amount of glossematic terms (lexeis) from several kinds of literary sources – epic, lyric and dramatic poetry, rhetoric, historiography, paremiography, neo and veterotestamentary tradition, and so on. Although medical glosses – in particular Hippocratic – are significantly present in the Lexikon, they have not been systematically investigated so far. After presenting a brief story of the more recent studies on the textual tradition and the edition of the Hesychius’ work, this paper aims to offer a thorough investigation of some Hesychian g…

Commenting on Historical Writings in Medieval Latin Europe : A Reconnaissance

2015

Modern scholarship seems to undervalue medieval commentaries on historical writings. This article intends to bring this phenomenon to scholars’ attention by providing a preliminary overview of the forms and subjects of such commentaries. It examines various types of evidence including not only a few commentaries proper (Nicolas Trevet’s on Livy and John of Dąbrówka’s on Vincent of Cracow), but also different apparatus consisting of more or less systematic interlinear and marginal glosses and commentary-like additions to vernacular translations, mostly of Italian and French origin. It begins by considering various consultation-related signs and annotations, such as cross-references. Then, it…

«Enrique de Villena y Curial e Güelfa»

2018

'A Difficult School Text in Anglo-Saxon England: The Third Book of Abbo’s Bella Parisiacae urbis', in Leeds Studies in English 37 (2006)

2006

2020

The history of the Liber Augustalis, from manuscripts to printed editions, make it possible to follow the path of adaptation of the glosses into two apparatuses, the Glossa Ordinaria by Marino da Caramanico and the Lectura Peregrina by Andrea da Isernia, which includes the notes of other jurists. Although moving in the wake of the literary genres of the school, this kind of interpretation is eminently practical. The aim is to create a link between the Liber Augustalis - still in force but often obsolete - and the law promulgated by Angevin sovereigns, fragmentary and unsystematic. For the legal science of the Regnum, the interpreter's task is to put together this different legal sources, cr…
