The present study examines the effects of dietary saturated (hydrogenated coconut oil) and polyunsaturated (salmon oil) fats on the composition and metabolism of lipoproteins in growing rats fed on protein-deficient diets. Four groups of rats were fed on the following diets for 28 d: 200 g casein+50 g coconut oil (COC)/kg, 20 g casein+50 g coconut oil (COd)/kg, 200 g casein + 50 g salmon oil (SAC)/kg, 20 g casein+50 g salmon oil (SAd)/kg. Effects of Strength Training and Nutritional Counseling on Metabolic Health Indicators in Aging Women

Purpose: Effects of strength training (ST) and nutritional counseling (NC) on metabolic health indicators were examined in 50 aging women. Methods: Subjects performed ST for 21 weeks. NC was given to obtain sufficient energy and protein intake, and recommended intake of fat and fiber. Results: NC increased intake of protein and polyunsaturated fat by 4.5% and 10.7% and decreased intake of saturated fat by 18.3%. Serum concentrations of total cholesterol (TC), LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C), total and HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C) ratio and triacylglycerols (TAG) decreased, and serum HDL-C increased in all subjects after ST. HPLC profile and evolution during storage of triglycerides and diglycerides in virgin olive oils

High-performance liquid chromatography has been used for determining the triglyceridice and diglyceridice composition of olive oils from main, minor and neglected Sicilians cultivars. The HPLC analysis has allowed the identification and the quantification of 16 triglycerides. Among these, OOO, POO+SOL, OOL and POL, have shown a content higher than 84% of the total area of peaks in the chromatographic profile. Activation of TRPC6 calcium channels by diacylglycerol (DAG)-containing arachidonic acid: A comparative study with DAG-containing docosahexaenoic acid

We synthesized a diacylglycerol (DAG)-containing arachidonic acid, i.e., 1-stearoyl-2-arachidonyl-sn-glycerol (SAG), and studied its implication in the modulation of canonical transient receptor potential sub-type 6 (TRPC6) channels in stably-transfected HEK-293 cells. SAG induced the influx of Ca(2+), and also of other bivalent cations like Ba(2+) and Sr(2+), in these cells. SAG-evoked Ca(2+) influx was not due to its metabolites as inhibitors of DAG-lipase (RHC80267) and DAG-kinase (R50922) failed to inhibit the response of the same. Hypolipidaemic effects of fenofibrate are not altered by mildronate-mediated normalization of carnitine concentration in rat liver.

The five-fold higher carnitine content in the liver of fenofibrate-treated rats addresses the question about the possible role of this enhancement in the hypolipidaemic effect of the drug and the underlying mechanisms. When fenofibrate was administered with mildronate (a gamma-butyrobetaine hydroxylase inhibitor) in suitable amount, the content in carnitine was found to be normalized in liver. However, triglyceride contents of liver and serum were then at least as low as in rats treated by fenofibrate only. AIMS: Women with gestational diabetes are more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease after pregnancy; however, the exact nature of the lipid alterations present is not clear.
