Mediterranean diet supplemented with nuts reduces waist circumference and shifts lipoprotein subfractions to a less atherogenic pattern in subjects a…
2013
[Objective]: The PREDIMED trial showed that Mediterranean diets supplemented with either extra-virgin olive oil or nuts reduced incident cardiovascular events compared to a control diet. Consumption of both supplemental foods has been associated with reduced LDL-cholesterol, but it is unknown whether they can shift lipoprotein subfractions to a less atherogenic pattern. We investigated changes in adiposity and lipoprotein subfractions after consumption of the PREDIMED diets.
Lipid composition of the human eye: are red blood cells a good mirror of retinal and optic nerve fatty acids?
2011
International audience; BACKGROUND: The assessment of blood lipids is very frequent in clinical research as it is assumed to reflect the lipid composition of peripheral tissues. Even well accepted such relationships have never been clearly established. This is particularly true in ophthalmology where the use of blood lipids has become very common following recent data linking lipid intake to ocular health and disease. In the present study, we wanted to determine in humans whether a lipidomic approach based on red blood cells could reveal associations between circulating and tissue lipid profiles. To check if the analytical sensitivity may be of importance in such analyses, we have used a do…
Adverse metabolic response to regular exercise: Is it a rare or common occurrence?
2012
Background. Individuals differ in the response to regular exercise. Whether there are people who experience adverse changes in cardiovascular and diabetes risk factors has never been addressed. Methodology/Principal Findings. An adverse response is defined as an exercise-induced change that worsens a risk factor beyond measurement error and expected day-to-day variation. Sixty subjects were measured three times over a period of three weeks, and variation in resting systolic blood pressure (SBP) and in fasting plasma HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), and insulin (FI) was quantified. The technical error (TE) defined as the within-subject standard deviation derived from these measur…
Uric acid is linked to cardiometabolic risk factors in overweight and obese youths.
2018
OBJECTIVE Observational studies have indicated that high levels of serum uric acid are associated with the risk of cardiovascular disease. The aim of the present study is to investigate the association of uric acid with individual cardiometabolic risk factors, as well as their degree of clustering, in overweight and moderate obese youth. METHODS Three hundred and thirty-three Caucasians of both sexes (149 women), from 5-18 years of age from those who underwent an assessment of overweight/obesity. Anthropometric parameters, office and 24-h blood pressure measurements and metabolic profile, including HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, insulin, HOMA index and uric acid were assessed. RESULTS Uric…
Spectrum of mutations of the LPL gene identified in Italy in patients with severe hypertriglyceridemia.
2015
Background: Monogenic hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) may result from mutations in some genes which impair the intravascular lipolysis of triglyceride (TG)-rich lipoproteins mediated by the enzyme Lipoprotein lipase (LPL). Mutations in the LPL gene are the most frequent cause of monogenic HTG (familial chylomicronemia) with recessive transmission. Methods: The LPL gene was resequenced in 149 patients with severe HTG (TG>10mmol/L) and 106 patients with moderate HTG (TG>4.5 and <10mmol/L) referred to tertiary Lipid Clinics in Italy. Results: In the group of severe HTG, 26 patients (17.4%) were homozygotes, 9 patients (6%) were compound heterozygotes and 15 patients (10%) were simple heter…
Testing the Short-Term Efficacy of a Lipid-Lowering Nutraceutical in the Setting of Clinical Practice: A Multicenter Study
2015
Abstract The main guidelines for cardiovascular disease prevention suggest that nutraceuticals could be an efficacious tool to improve lipid pattern. Our aim was to carry out a clinical trial comparing the metabolic effects of a combined nutraceutical containing both red yeast rice and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and a phytosterol-based approach in a setting of clinical practice. This was a multicenter open study with parallel control. We consecutively enrolled 107 pharmacologically untreated subjects affected by primary polygenic hypercholesterolemia and metabolic syndrome, assigned to 8-week treatment with a combined treatment with red yeast rice (Dif1Stat®, including 5 mg monacol…
Ezetimibe/simvastatin 10/20 mg versus simvastatin 40 mg in coronary heart disease patients
2010
BACKGROUND: Reducing low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is the primary goal of therapy in patients with hypercholesterolemia and coronary heart disease (CHD). METHODS: This double blind placebo-controlled study enrolled patients 18 to 75 years of age with primary hypercholesterolemia and establishedCHDwhowere taking a stable daily dose of simvastatin 20 mg. Patients were randomized to ezetimibe/simvastatin 10/20 mg (eze/simva; n 5 56) or simvastatin 40 mg (simva; n 5 56) for 6 weeks. Percent change from baseline in LDL-C, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and triglycerides were assessed by use of the Student t test. The percent of patients achieving L…
Fenofibrate effect on triglyceride and postprandial response of apolipoprotein A5 variants: the GOLDN study.
2007
Objective— Apolipoprotein A5 ( APOA5 ) is a key determinant of plasma triglyceride (TG) concentrations. Genetic variation at the APOA5 locus could be responsible for some of the observed differences in response to fenofibrate therapy. Methods and Results— We examined the association between tag SNPs (−1131T>C and 56C>G) at APOA5 and TG and HDL-C response to fenofibrate and a postprandial lipid challenge in 791 men and women participating in the GOLDN study. After 3-week drug treatment, APOA5 56G carriers displayed significant decrease in TG ( P =0.006), and increase in HDL-C ( P =0.002) levels relative to their basal values in the fasting state when compared with noncarriers (a TG re…
