Results of an immunohistochemical study in normal urothelium and transitional cell carcinomas of the bladder are presented. Paraffin-embedded material was confronted with immunoantisera against carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), keratin (K), cytokeratin (CK) and epithelial membrane antigen (EMA). Immunohistochemical findings confirm the changes in reactivity of dysplastic urothelium and carcinoma in situ for CEA, CK and EMA, in comparison with normal urothelium. Immunonephelometric determination of the C4b-binding protein.

A fully mechanised immunonephelometric method for the rapid and specific determination of C4b-binding protein (C4b-BP) in citrated plasma is described. The method utilizes commercially available rabbit antiserum against human C4b-BP and a nephelometer analyser. A single determination can be performed within 6 min, requiring 80 microliters sample volume. The measuring range is about 10 to 200% of normal C4b-BP. Precision is characterized by intraassay coefficients of variation between 1.5% and 2.8%, and interassay coefficients of variation between 4.0% and 4.6% for the same C4b-BP concentrations. Associations between leprosy and serum protein groups

Serum protein group typings were done on a sample of n=173 adult healthy Negroes from the Macua tribe in Mozambique and on n=129 leprous individuals from the same tribe. Unfortunately, the type of leprosy is not known. Whilst between leprosy and haptoglobins, transferrins and Pi proteins no associations could be observed, statistically significant associations between leprosy and ceruloplasmin resp. β2 I were found. It is pointed out that these associations should be confirmed by further research on other populations and with respect to type and process of leprosy, until biological and population genetical interpretations will be possible.

Background/Aims Hepatitis C virus (HCV) causes a chronic infection that can lead to fibrosis and carcinoma. Immune responses mediated by cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) could be involved in viral clearance or persistence, and therefore in determining the course of the disease. The pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)-6 (refs. 1-5) can bind to cells lacking the IL-6 receptor (IL-6R) when it forms a complex with the soluble IL-6R (sIL-6R) (trans signaling). Here, we have assessed the contribution of this system to the increased resistance of mucosal T cells against apoptosis in Crohn disease (CD), a chronic inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract. Autoantibodies to the human hepatic asialoglycoprotein receptor have been found in nearly 50% of the sera of patients with autoimmune chronic active hepatitis and in 15% of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis. In this study we demonstrate that the human hepatic asialoglycoprotein receptor is also a target antigen for T cell-mediated immune responses. A phase II/III clinical study of enzyme replacement therapy with idursulfase in mucopolysaccharidosis II (Hunter syndrome)

Purpose: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of recombinant human iduronate-2-sulfatase (idursulfase) in the treatment of mucopolysaccharidosis II. Methods: Ninety-six mucopolysaccharidosis II patients between 5 and 31 years of age were enrolled in a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Patients were randomized to placebo infusions, weekly idursulfase (0.5 mg/kg) infusions or every-other-week infusions of idursulfase (0.5 mg/kg). In 1998, an IL93Met mutation in the ubiquitin carboxy-terminal hydrolase L1 ( UCH-L1 ) gene was identified in a German family affected by PD.1 Recently, others2-4⇓⇓ found that the S18Y polymorphism in exon 3 of UCH-L1 is associated with a low risk of PD. To verify these interesting results, we decided to design a case-control study on the S18Y polymorphism of the UCH-L1 gene using sporadic PD cases.
