Thomas MacGreevy and Samuel Beckett. Affinity and Controversy

Acquainted with Beckett in (1928) Parisian Ecole Normale, Thomas MacGreevy soon became his confidant and a literary mentor introducing him to James Joyce and Richard Aldington. Their artistic interests took form, among others, of the common declaration “Manifesto. Poetry is Vertical” (1932), signed by them and several other poets associated with Jolas’s transition. However, the intellectual attraction between the two was, at the same time, disturbed, or, so to say, spiced, by the tension between Beckett’s agnosticism and MacGreevy’s Catholicism. It is a common critical tradition to compare a Polish novel and a French one. The article attempts to examine this phenomenon and to State exactly what (or no) relations between both texts, by searching critical judgments of the time and by analyzing the same texts’ level. There are following parallels (typologically, but not genetically determined) to be confirmed: anti-positivist and idealistic attitude of both authors, which have seen their texts as manifestos of outlook ; an intertextual potency of the novels, close related to their hypo- and hypertexts; as well as several, although superficial similarities of stories’ plots. Dimensions of the Relationship between the Individual and Her Unique Worldview Construction

Each individual constructs his own private worldview using elements from established worldview traditions. The biographical character of this formation makes this the individual’s “Unique Worldview Construction” (UWC). The purpose of this theoretical study is to analyse the dynamic relationship between the individual and her own UWC. It describes more how than what he believes in or denies. The variation is exceedingly complex.
