Pasaules spogulis
1599
Teoloģiski, filozofiski ētisks un vēsturisks traktāts, viens no apjomīgākajiem N. Molllīna iespieddarbiem. Izdots arī latīņu valodā (1588, 1599). Vācu valodas izdevums dāvāts Livonijas karavadonim dažādu valstu karadienestā Georgam Fārensbaham (1551-1602), Cēsu pirmajam vaivadam no 1598. gada līdz 1602. gadam, kad krita karā pret zviedriem aplencot Vīlandes pili. Grāmatas titullapu ietver ornamentāla aproce ar dažādām fantastiskām būtnēm, grifiem, jūras vāravām utml. Ievadā publicēta Dāvida Hilhena vēstule Georgam Cīgleram. Tad seko Dāniela Hermaņa sacerētais Georga Fārensbaha dzīves apraksts. Šis G. Cīglera darbs ir vienīgais Mollīna iespieddarbs, kas guvis plašāku ievērību ārpus Livonijas…
Reproductive state and care giving in Stegodyphus (Araneae: Eresidae) and the implications for the evolution of sociality
2002
Abstract Cooperative brood care is a rare phenomenon in spiders and is restricted to a few social species, including three in the genus Stegodyphus. Brood care in Stegodyphus begins with regurgitation feeding followed by matriphagy: the young consume the body fluids of their mother causing her to die quickly. Whether such an extreme form of maternal care can become a communal task should depend on physiological or historical preconditions. I investigated whether femaleStegodyphus lineatus feed young or allow matriphagy according to their own reproductive state. Broods of young of two age classes (2 or 10 days after hatching) were isolated or fostered out to adult females that were unmated, …
Liturgy and Philanthropy Today
2020
The Liturgy is the holy and the sanctifying divine service in which the most merciful love of God for men or the divine Philanthropy is celebrated in the most intense way. The true Liturgy takes place in heaven and in this sense there is only one Liturgy, that of the perfect love of the Holy Trinity in which all creatures are called to participate. Human beings connected through the body to this world can do so through the cultic ritual, which is in essence, a diastole, an exit of God’s love to the world, in order to attract through the systole of his love all creatures to the life of communion. The Eucharistic Liturgy is this universal dynamism that draws the whole cosmos to union with God…
Injured Axons Instruct Schwann Cells to Build Constricting Actin Spheres to Accelerate Axonal Disintegration
2019
Summary: After a peripheral nerve lesion, distal ends of injured axons disintegrate into small fragments that are subsequently cleared by Schwann cells and later by macrophages. Axonal debris clearing is an early step of the repair process that facilitates regeneration. We show here that Schwann cells promote distal cut axon disintegration for timely clearing. By combining cell-based and in vivo models of nerve lesion with mouse genetics, we show that this mechanism is induced by distal cut axons, which signal to Schwann cells through PlGF mediating the activation and upregulation of VEGFR1 in Schwann cells. In turn, VEGFR1 activates Pak1, leading to the formation of constricting actomyosin…
Induction of the peroxisome proliferator activated receptor by fenofibrate in rat liver
1992
AbstractThe process of peroxisome proliferation in rodent liver by hypolipidemic compounds and related substances has recently been shown to be receptor-madiated. In the present study, we have examined the effect of oral administration of the strong peroxisome proliferator fenofibrate on the hepatic expression level of the peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPAR) in rats. Immunoblots of rat liver cytosols and nuclear extracs using antibodies raised against recombinant PPAR/β-galactosidase fusion proteins revealed a pronounced increase in the amount of PPAR protein in response to fenofibrate treatment. This induction could also be confirmed at the level or RNA by Northern blotting. …
Ultrasound-guided intra-tumor injection of combined immunotherapy cures mice from orthotopic prostate cancer.
2013
Intra-tumor injection of immunotherapeutic agents is often the most effective, likely because of concomitant modification of tumor microenvironment. We tested an immunotherapeutic regimen consisting of CpG oligonucleotides and of adenovirus-mediated gene delivery of CCL16 chemokine directly into orthotopically implanted prostate tumors by ultrasound-guided injection, followed by systemic administration of an anti-IL-10R antibody. This combination treatment induced rapid stromal rearrangement, characterized by massive leukocyte infiltration and large areas of necrosis, a scenario that eventually led to complete tumor rejection and systemic immunity in 75 % of the treated mice. In vivo T lymp…
Glia talk back.
2014
This study shows that the activity of neurons can trigger shedding of a protein, NG2, from the surface of oligodendrocyte precursor cells; this protein in turn modulates synaptic transmission, revealing a two-way conversation between neurons and glia.
Cellular localization of mGluR3 and mGluR5 mRNAs in normal and injured rat brain
2007
Abstract In order to understand the role of metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) in the brain, it is important to know how the mGluRs are differentially expressed among the different cell types. At present, the cellular expression of mGluR3 and mGluR5 has been mostly studied in terms of proteins with observations suggesting the expression of both mGluR3 and mGluR5 in neuronal and in glial cells. In order to verify the brain cell type-expressing mGluR3 and mGluR5 mRNAs, both in normal and injured brain, we performed a double labeling analysis, by in situ hybridization for mGluR3 or mGluR5 mRNA and immunohistochemistry for specific cellular markers. This approach allowed us to find mGluR…
Hepatitis C virus replication in ‘autoimmune’ chronic hepatitis
1991
Abstract Both high and low anti-hepatitis C virus antibody (anti-HCV) prevalence has been reported in autoimmune chronic active hepatitis. Therefore, we studied 15 consecutive HBsAg-negative, ELISA anti-HCV-positive, autoantibody-positive patients with biopsy proven chronic active hepatitis in order to confirm ELISA specificity by immunoblot test (RIBA-HCV), and to evaluate HCV replication by serum HCV-RNA. Nine patients were anti-nuclear, three type 1 anti-liver-kidney microsomal and three anti-smooth muscle antibody positive. None had associated autoimmune disease. All cases showed mild clinical disease and only moderate necroinflammatory activity. Response to prednisone was poor. RIBA-HC…
Evolution of alternative male morphotypes in oxyurid nematodes: a case of convergence?
2014
Male dimorphism has been reported across different taxa and is usually expressed as the coexistence of a larger morph with exaggerated male traits and a smaller one with reduced traits. The evolution and maintenance of male dimorphism are still poorly understood for several of the species in which it has been observed. Here, we analyse male dimorphism in several species of reptile parasitic nematodes of the genus Spauligodon, in which a major male morph (exaggerated morph), which presents the traditional male morphological traits reported for this taxon, coexists with a minor morph with reduced morphological traits (i.e. reduced genital papillae) resembling more closely the males of the sis…
