Abstract The direction of the transformation of Fe-bearing minerals under harshly changing redox conditions is still under debate. Some studies suggest preferential accumulation of weakly crystalline Fe oxides while other studies showed that repeated redox cycles favour the presence of crystalline phases. In-situ transformation of iron-bearing minerals in marshland-derived paddy subsoil

Transformations of Fe-bearing minerals under alternating redox conditions are not fully understood. In-situ approaches under field conditions have rarely been used. We exposed mesh bags containing ferrihydrite, goethite or nontronite to changing redox conditions in subsoil that had been under paddy management for 100, 700 and 2000 years. After 12 months, the minerals were retrieved and analysed for organic carbon and by X-ray diffraction; in addition, nontronite was analysed for cation exchange capacity and by Mossbauer spectroscopy at 278 and 4.2 K. Characterisation of the magnetic iron phases in Clovis Class rocks in Gusev crater from the MER Spirit Mössbauer spectrometer

Abstract Mossbauer backscattering spectra of eight Martian rocks, acquired by the MIMOS II spectrometer of Rover Spirit (MER-A) and containing goethite in addition to other iron minerals, have been selected for in-depth numerical analysis. Where feasible, different temperature windows for a given rock were considered. A novel calibration/folding procedure, exclusively based on the fitted positions of the eight prominent absorption lines in the transmission spectra of the reference target and not relying on the error signal of the MIMOS II spectrometer, has been developed. Adsorption of the herbicide 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) by goethite.

Interaction between the goethite surface and 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) herbicide was studied using density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with molecular dynamics (MD). The important step made here lies in the use of a periodic DFT method enabling the study of a mineral surface of different protonation states, in strong contrast with previous molecular modeling studies limited to single protonation state corresponding to the point of zero charge. Rock paintings from Minas Gerais, Brasil, investigated by in-situ Mössbauer spectroscopy

The archaeological site of Santana do Riacho is located at about 90 km northeastern of Belo Horizonte, in the “Serra do Cipo” region. The recent development of a miniaturised Mossbauer spectrometer opened the possibility of making in-situ measurements of the rock paitings, and the results of such pioneer work is presented in this contribution. The spectrometer MIMOS II operates in backscattering geometry measuring the scattered 14.41 keV Mossbauer radiation and the 6.4 keV Fe X-rays. Precipitation synthesis of magnetite Fe3O4 nanoflakes

Precipitation can be applied to synthesize magnetite Fe3O4 nanoflakes in an ambient air atmosphere without using any surfactant, templates or special equipment. Magnetite nanoflakes were precipitated from only Fe2+ chloride solution without adding Fe3+. The formation of Fe3O4 nanoflakes is suggested to occur due to formation of an intermediate goethite phase, thus providing anisotropic crystal growth. Compared to other methods, the method presented here is fast and suitable for large scale synthesis.

Iron mineralogy and aqueous alteration on Mars from the MER Mössbauer spectrometers

The twin Mars Exploration Rovers Spirit (Gusev crater) and Opportunity (Meridiani Planum) used MIMOS II Moessbauer spectrometers to analyze martian surface materials in the first application of extraterrestrial Moessbauer spectroscopy. The instruments acquired spectra that identified the speciation of Fe according to oxidation state, coordination state, and mineralogical composition and provided quantitative information about the distribution of Fe among oxidation states, coordination states, and Fe-bearing phases. Microfungal Alkylation and Volatilization of Selenium Adsorbed by Goethite

Selenium adsorbed in the oxyanionic form by Fe-oxides like goethite is considered of benefit for long-term stabilization of (79)Se under near field conditions of radionuclide waste disposal sites. However, microbe-mediated volatilization of the uranium fission product (79)Se has not yet been considered for risk assessment based on the use of the water-solid distribution coefficient K(D). Silicic acid competes for dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) immobilization by the iron hydroxide plaque mineral goethite.

Abstract A surface complexation modeling approach was used to extend the knowledge about processes that affect the availability of dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) in the soil rhizosphere in presence of a strong sorbent, e.g., Fe plaques on rice roots.
