Quantification of the risk of relapses after thyroid loboisthmusectomy for benign thyroid nodules

AIM OF THE STUDY: To evaluate correlations between pre-operating epidemiological, clinical and diagnostic data and relapses concerning to patients operated on for benign thyroid nodules. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The AA. carried out a new ultrasonographic exam in 155 patients selected at random among 1012 treated by thyroid lobectomy between September 1976 and December 2002; 107 relapses were found (69%). AIM: The aim of this study is to assess, retrospectively, the incidence of secondary hypoparathyroidism after total thyroidectomy in patients with retrosternal goitre. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From January 2009 to September 2015, 622 patients who undergone total thyroidectomy for goitre, were retrospectively observed. The patients were divided into two group: Group A, including 58 patients with retrosternal goitre and Group B, including 562 patients with in situ goitre. Thyroid disorders are more frequent in old age, especially in women. Overt thyroid dysfunction may manifest as aging itself or as age-associated disorders of other organs. Therefore, an accurate clinical suspicion is essential for their detection in elders with multiple comorbidities, malnutrition, and chronic polypharmacy. Because chronic diseases are more prevalent in old age, nonthyroidal illness is also common in this age group. Intrathoracic goitre is defined as that goitre which is partially or totally found in the anterior or posterior mediastinum, and its incidence is associated with multinodular goitre. The diagnosis is relatively easy, mainly with imaging tests, and treatment varies, but of choice, surgical treatment is recommended. This article attempts to present a review of the literature on the diagnosis and management of this disease.

In the Department of Paediatric Surgery of the University Hospital of Mainz and the Department of Paediatric Surgery of the University Hospital of Frankfurt/M 90 children with thyroid gland lesions were operated on between 1970 and 1988. 78 patients had benign findings and 12 had malignant tumours. The most frequent operative indication for benign lesions was the euthyroid goitre (57 patients). We found nodular goitre in 45 patients, cystic goitre in 11 patients, and diffuse goitre in only 1 patient. 20 children were suffering from hyperthyroidism (11 with Basedow's disease, 9 with autonomy) and 1 from Hashimoto's thyroiditis.
