Background Chronic endometritis is a persistent inflammation of the endometrial mucosa caused by bacterial pathogens such as Enterobacteriaceae, Enterococcus, Streptococcus, Staphylococcus, Mycoplasma, and Ureaplasma. Although chronic endometritis can be asymptomatic, it is found in up to 40% of infertile patients and is responsible for repeated implantation failure and recurrent miscarriage. Neisseria gonorrhoeae expresses numerous surface proteins that mediate bacterial adherence and invasion during infection. Gonococci expressing serotype A of the major outer membrane porin PorB (PorB(IA)) are frequently isolated from patients with severe disseminating infections. PorB(IA) triggers efficient adherence and invasion under low phosphate conditions mimicking systemic bloodstream infections. Here, we identify the human heat shock glycoprotein Gp96 and the scavenger receptor SREC as PorB(IA)-specific receptors. Abstract Molecular epidemiology and phylogenetic analyses are frequently used in the investigation of viral transmission cases in forensic contexts. Here, we present the methods and results of the analysis of a bacterial transmission episode in an alleged child abuse case using complete genome sequences obtained by high-throughput sequencing (HTS) methods. We obtained genomes of Neisseria gonorrhoeae from the victim, the suspect, and 29 unrelated controls. The analysis of the genomes revealed that the victim and suspect isolates had identical sequences in both the bacterial chromosome and the single plasmid present in them.
