Mission versus ethics in 1 Corinthians 9? ‘Implicit ethics’ as an aid in analysing New Testament texts

2012

The central question concerning how mission and ethics are related arises within the context of the understanding of ethics itself and in this way often leads back to the familiar ‘indicative and imperative’ model. This oversimplified approach, however, is ultimately inadequate for the Pauline ethic in general and for the particular problem concerning mission and ethics. In this article, 1 Corinthians 9 was drawn upon as an example for the ‘implicit ethics’ model, a model which allows for a more nuanced presentation of the grounds and justification for behaviour and action. Through this approach it became clear that the proclamation of the Gospel does not have to be ‘unethical’; rather, it …

Cuore, anima e mente. Un esempio di circolarità lessicale tra tradizione islamica e cristiana

2018

The starting point of this article is a topic that features in the synoptic Gospels (Mt 22, 37; Mc 12, 29-31; Lc 10, 27) and is presented as the most essential among Jesus’ precepts: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind”. The three terms that are mentioned here – heart, soul, and mind – are of prominent importance both in the Christian and Islamic spiritual traditions. We compare them and the respective traditions of commentary both on a lexicographical and exegetical level. The analysis of similarities and differences issued from a comparison of the contexts of the exegeses, and the respective reactions to the common Biblical background,…

Rahat tai henki? : suomalaisten gospelmuusikkojen käsityksiä suomi-gospelin maallistumista

2010

Kandidaatintutkielmani tarkoituksena on selvittää, miten suomalaiset gospelmuusikot suhtautuvat Suomi-gospelin maallistumisilmiöön. Valitsin gospelmusiikin maallistumisen tutkielmani aiheeksi, koska aih…

‘You shall not wash my feet εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα’ (John 13.8): Time and Ethics in Peter’s Interactions with Jesus in the Johannine Narrative

2019

In search of ‘timeless’ norms or behavioral examples, the Gospel of John seems to offer few options. The principle of brotherly love exemplified in the act of foot washing is often considered as the only example of ethically significant material in the Johannine narrative. However, by taking a closer look at the ‘tempo’ of actions and the characters’ orientation in time, we can understand that Peter’s protest against the foot washing is not only in favor of norms that secure existing hierarchies, but is driven by temporal norms, i.e. his genuine fear of death. Peter’s protest (Jn 13.8) indicates his desire for the eternal life promised by Jesus (Jn 11.25-26) and at the same time it serves as…

Amplified John? Kristologiske tekster i Johannesevangeliet og Bibelselskapets NT05-oversettelse

2011

Author's version of an article published in the journal: Tidsskrift for teologi og kirke. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.idunn.no/ts/ttk/2011/02/art03 The article argues that the latest translation of the New Testament (NT05) by the Norwegian Bible Society has a tendency to amplify several Christological texts in the Gospel of John. It consists of two parts: Part 1 discusses the translation of John 1:1–5, 1:14, 1:15 and 1:18, and offers a new general interpretation of the prologue. Part 2 treats the translation of ekserkjomai in Joh 8:42, 13:3, 16:27–30, and 17:8.

The ‘Unglossed’ Words of the Lindisfarne Glosses

2016

The Old English glosses to the Gospels in London, British Library, MS Cotton Nero D.iv represent one of the largest interlinear apparatuses to a single Latin text in the vernacular. However, about one thousand words of the Latin text are left unglossed both in the Gospels and the prefatory material. The largest number of omissions concern proper names (personal names, place-names and ethnonyms), but also words such as camelus or ventilabrum were left unglossed whether always or just sometimes. This paper investigates the number and the distribution of these unglossed terms as well as their nature.

Gospelmūzikas tradīcija Latvijā

2017

Mūzika ir viens no pirmatnējiem komunikācijas veidiem cilvēku starpā.
