L’architettura gotica in Sicilia centro-orientale nelle perizie degli architetti d’età moderna
2018
Gothic architecture: technologies and construction site management
2018
During the Gothic times, between the XIV and the XV centuries, depending on the location, many interesting developments occurred. Such an architectural movement moved towards completely new directions and ideas if compared to the previous centuries’ construction. First of all the concept of the space, inner or external, that became highly polycentric and driven to the highness and to a certain dematerialization of the solids. Such a novel vision was often related to the new religious fervour of that time. Some examples are the reduction of the masonry’s sections, a massive usage of large coloured glazing, and the creation of light groined vaults. On the exterior, all of that corresponded to…
2019
Coexistence and mixture phenomena of different architectural idioms in the early 1500s Sicily are not rare. The present essay evaluates two late Gothic masters, Antonio Belguardo and Girolamo Vicchiuzzo (his epigone), whose activity in Palermo and Alcamo protracts in various and "eclectic" buildings, which go beyond the first half of the XVIth century.
Ann Radcliffe’s Gothic Romances and the Sea
2021
Biographical materials and the writer’s journals show that Ann Radcliffe had some personal knowledge of the sea and to some extent of sailing. She was also a lover of nature, an enthusiast of 17th -century landscapists, a connoisseur of Pre-Romantic poetry, who was also familiar with contemporary esthetic tastes and theories. In this context, the article analyzes seascapes, maritime and nautical references, motifs of storm and shipwreck in Radcliffe’s Gothic romances, including some poetical lines inspired by the sea with which The Mysteries of Udolpho is interspersed. The writer’s descriptions of the sea and her use of this element in her works are discussed in relation to her fictional ch…
Present participles in the new Gothic palimpsest
2015
A new Gothic text has recently been discovered and it is contained in a palimpsest bifolium of the Archive of the Board of Trustees of San Petronio’s Basilica in Bologna. Two scholars of Milan, R. Bianca Finazzi and Paola Tornaghi, have studied the palimpsest. The author received their paper directly from the two colleagues, who had received word of the interest the discovery of the new Gothic text had kindled in him. In his examination of the text, the author was able to find two cases confirming and one supplementing what he had written in Melazzo (1992) about the two different Gothic forms of the nominative singular of the present participle in the masculine, of which one ends in -ndaand…

[ES] In 1428 the painter Jaume Mateu, who was trained in the workshop of the international Gothic master of Valencia, Pere Nicolau, painted an altarpiece dedicated to San Blas for the jurist Juan Gomez from Villar del Cobo. This study analyzes the style of the preserved works and places them in the circle of the Valencian painter documented in Villar.

Injustice in the Ruins and a Disordered Post-Apocalypse: Gothic Ideology in the Digital Game World of Fallout 3
2020
The Gothic is an influential source for storytelling in a wide range of digital games. Thus far, interpreting it in games and how they are informed by Gothic ideology has been little studied. This study seeks to address this gap in research by investigating these issues in the narrative of the action role-playing game, Fallout 3. More specifically, through a close reading of the game narrative and by drawing on theories of the Gothic, ideological aspects of the Gothic are analyzed in detail with specific reference to non-player characters and their actions and dialogue along with elements of the mise-en-scéne, style, and simulation. Results show how classic Gothic ideology is reproduced in …
