Study of the effects of salt crystallisation on degradation of limestone rocks

Salt crystallization is widely recognized as a cause of deterioration of porous building materials. In particular, the crystallization pressure of salt crystals growing in confined pores is found to be the main cause for damage. The aim of this study is to better understand the degradation of porous rocks induced by salt crystallisation and correlate such processes with the intrinsic characteristics of materials. Abstract Degradation of edible oils during their heating process has been evaluated through the determination of cis -unsaturation and trans -fatty acids together with free fatty acids as a function of time and temperature heating. Short communication: Driftwood provides reliable chronological markers in Arctic coastal deposits

Originating from the boreal forest and often transported over large distances, driftwood characterizes many Arctic coastlines. Here we present a combined assessment of radiocarbon (14C) and dendrochronological (ring width) age estimates of driftwood samples to constrain the progradation of two Holocene beach-ridge systems near the Lena Delta in the Siberian Arctic (Laptev Sea). Our data show that the 14C ages obtained on syndepositional driftwood from beach deposits yield surprisingly coherent chronologies for the coastal evolution of the field sites. Skeletal muscle atrophy is characterized by a decrease in muscle fiber size as a result of a decreased protein synthesis, which leads to degradation of contractile muscle fibers. It can occur after denervation and immobilization, and glucocorticoids (GCs) may also increase protein breakdown contributing to the loss of muscle mass and myofibrillar proteins. Abstract In 2004, during ordinary maintenance work, consisting in the waterproofing of a building located in the South of Italy, the long-span (14.50 m) in situ cast reinforced concrete (RC) roof partially collapsed. The building, constructed in 1950, was in service as a cinema up to 1967 and utilized as a school up to 1985. Finally, it was a hotel up to 2000. In 2004, when the building was not in service and underwent maintenance work, it partially collapsed under the dead load. New flow-multicommutation method for the photo-chemiluminometric determination of the carbamate pesticide asulam

This paper deals with a straightforward automated method for the determination of asulam in water based on the use of a flow manifold including three computer-controlled solenoid valves. The method involves irradiating on an aqueous solution of asulam in glycine buffer at pH 8.3 with UV light during 90 s, then follows the oxidation with potassium permanganate in a sulphuric medium and chemiluminescence-based detection of the resulting photoproducts. The limit of detection thus achieved is 40 mug l(-1). The detector response is linear up to a 5 mg l(-1) asulam concentration and the throughput is 30 samples h(-1). Abstract A simple, sensitive, and precise method for the determination of thiamine hydrochloride in a flow‐injection system is described. The method is based on the UV irradiation of thiamine in acid medium. Then, the photo‐fragments are oxidized by permanganate in acid medium, and the resultant chemiluminescent intensity is measured. The optimum conditions for the photoreaction and for the chemiluminescence emission were investigated.
