Following a successful period of data-taking between 2006 and 2011, the Virgo gravitational-wave detector was taken offline for a major upgrade. The changes made to the instrument significantly increased the complexity of the control systems and meant that an extended period of commissioning was required to reach a sensitivity appropriate for science data-taking. This commissioning period was completed in July of 2017 and the second-generation Advanced Virgo detector went on to join the Advanced LIGO detectors in the O2 science run in August of the same year. Recent findings in mice have revealed the molecular identity of the some pheromonal molecules triggering intersexual attraction. Predicting tire/pavement noise impact reduction using numerical simulation and experimental data for open graded asphalt mixture

The environmental impact of noise from roads and highways traffic is relevant in urban and rural areas. The use of open-graded asphalt pavements reduces significantly the noise, entrapping the acoustic waves inside the porous structure of the material. In this paper we propose a simulation approach in order to predict the acoustic properties of the asphalt mixture from geometrical and topological indicators. Regional concentration of university graduates : The role of high school grades and parental background

In this paper, we analyse long-term changes in the regional distribution and migration flows of university graduates in Finland and Sweden. This study is based on detailed longitudinal population register data, including information on high school grades and parental background. We find a distinct pattern of skill divergence across regions in both countries over the last 3 decades. The uneven distribution of human capital has been reinforced by the mobility patterns of university graduates, for whom regional sorting by high school grades and parental background is evident. The correspondence between PISA performance and school achievement in Finland.

In the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), the key knowledge and skills needed in modern society are assessed. So far, however, little is known on the relationship between PISA performance and school achievement. Using Finnish PISA 2015 and 2018 data combined with the national register of education records, we studied whether there is correspondence between PISA performance and school achievement. The results showed that the correspondence between PISA performance and school achievement is moderate. Background Most previous studies of teaching styles and reading skills have been cross-sectional. Longitudinal research is needed to clarify the direction of effects. The present longitudinal study examined the degree to which differences in teaching styles in the third grade predict the sixth-grade reading performance. Background Systemic low-grade inflammation has been proposed as an underlying pathophysiological mechanism for cardiometabolic diseases. We investigated the associations of physical fitness with systemic low-grade inflammatory state in a population sample of children. Methods Altogether 391 children aged 6–9 years were examined.
