Tensions of student voice in higher education : Involving students in degree programme curricula design

This paper considers the direct involvement of students in degree programme curricula design, specifically four computer science teacher students designing new curricula for the Faculty of Information Technology of the University of Jyväskylä. They participated in a project to make recommendations for the 2017–2020 master’s and bachelor’s programme curricula. We examined how these recommendations were implemented in the new curricula and what hindered student voice. The "Young Doctors Program" (DJD) was introduced in 1999 in order to encourage R&D employers to hire recent PhD graduates by atargeted measure of the Research Tax Credit. Since 2008, it has provided a substantial cost reduction if firms recruit recent PhD graduates. Although many global MBA programs teach intercultural communication, what happens when the method for teaching that concept becomes mostly experiential? Concerning the role of everyday discourses on disability in the realiza- tion of disability policy, this qualitative study focuses on the problematic meanings of disability and of being disabled in 45 fictional texts about a disabled woman and man (21/24) written by non-disabled graduate students and welfare professionals. The traditional individualising un- derstanding of disability was dominant in the discourses of the texts, especially in those about the disabled women which also repeated oth- ering discourses. Entrepreneurship Training and Self-Employment among University Graduates

In economies characterized by low labor demand and high rates of youth unemployment, entrepreneurship training has the potential to enable youth to gain skills and create their own jobs. This paper presents experimental evidence on a new entrepreneurship track that provides business training and personalized coaching to university students in Tunisia. Undergraduates in the final year of licence appliquee were given the opportunity to graduate with a business plan instead of following the standard curriculum. Undergraduate experiment with fractal diffraction gratings

We present a simple diffraction experiment with fractal gratings based on the triadic Cantor set. Diffraction by fractals is proposed as a motivating strategy for students of optics in the potential applications of optical processing. Fraunhofer diffraction patterns are obtained using standard equipment present in most undergraduate physics laboratories and compared with those obtained with conventional periodic gratings. It is shown that fractal gratings produce self-similar diffraction patterns which can be evaluated analytically. Good agreement is obtained between experimental and numerical results. © 2011 IOP Publishing Ltd.
Graduate employment and the returns to higher education in Africa

Importantly, one of our methods adjusts for the effect of higher education on the rate of joblessness, which is substantial in most African countries, and particularly for women. By 1990, tow-thirds of all the jobs available for graduates with higher educational qualifications required advanced computer skills. However, only 30% of these graduates felt that they mastered these skills sufficiently well. Many of them have had to complete their initial vocational training by taking continuing training courses. In addition, mastering computer skills usually means earning higher wages. These results were based on a survey carried out on 35000 people who had graduated in disciplines of all kinds in eleven European countries and Japan.
