Comparison of analytical methods and AI tools for material characterisation in hot forming

2002

Abstract Hot forming processes probably represent the most ancient of forming operations and what is more they are still today commonly used in modern mechanical industry in order to obtain sound parts, achieving large deformations with a limited required power. Hot metal forming operations are characterised by a large number of physical and thermal phenomena which have to be taken into account in order to model and design the processes themselves. Actually several thermally activated phenomena occur during the forming processes such as recovery, recrystallisation, grain growth, precipitation, allotropic transformations, etc. In this paper the comparison between an analytical method based o…

Oxygen stoichiometry control of nanometric oxide compounds: The case of titanium ferrites

2011

Three techniques have been coupled with an original device, based on H{sub 2}/H{sub 2}O equilibrium, controlling oxygen partial pressure: XRD, TGA and DC conductivity in order to characterize very reactive compounds such as nanometric powders. From XRD, both the structure and the oxygen stoichiometry (thanks to their lattice parameter) were investigated in situ. From TGA, it was the oxygen stoichiometry (thanks to mass gain or loss) which was determined. From DC conductivity, it was both the structure and the oxygen stoichiometry (thanks to the activation energy) which were obtained. The advantages were to determine very rapidly and with a small amount of powder the equilibrium conditions (…

Grain size dependent bandgap shift of SnO2 nanofibers

2013

SnO2 nanofibers with various grain sizes ranging from 18.5 to 31.6 nm in diameter were fabricated by electrospinning a polymeric solution and subsequent controlled calcination of the as-spun fibers. The calcined fibers were polycrystalline and composed of densely packed nano-sized SnO2 grains. The effect of the nanograin size on the optical bandgap of SnO2 nanofibers was examined by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The bandgap showed a strong dependence on the nanograin size. The bandgap decreased with increasing nanograin size. Some calculations were performed to understand the relationship between the experimentally obtained bandgaps of the SnO2 nanofibers and the theoretical ones. Quant…

Spark plasma sintering of cobalt ferrite nanopowders prepared by coprecipitation and hydrothermal synthesis.

2007

International audience; Cobalt ferrite exhibits a high coercivity at room temperature and a strong magnetic anisotropy compared to the other spinel ferrites and, consequently appears as an interesting material for permanent magnets and high-density recording. The magnetic properties depend also on the crystallite size. In order to keep the powder properties in a bulk material, dense nanostructured cobalt ferrite has to be sintered. A field activated sintering process like spark plasma sintering (SPS) may be promising for such challenge. The present paper deals with: (i) the preparation of cobalt ferrite by two methods: coprecipitation and hydrothermal synthesis in supercritical water; (ii) …

The combined effect of refractory coatings containing reactive elements on high temperature oxidation behavior of chromia-forming alloys

2003

Abstract The high temperature oxidation behaviors of chromia-forming alloys (F17Ti and Fe–30Cr alloys) have been studied at 1273 K under isothermal conditions and at 1223 K under cyclic conditions, in air under the atmospheric pressure. To extend the oxidation lifetime, coatings have been applied onto the alloy surfaces. Al2O3 and Cr2O3 films doped with Sm2O3 or Nd2O3 were prepared via the metal-organic chemical vapor deposition technique. Single Cr2O3, Al2O3, Nd2O3 and codeposited Cr2O3–Nd2O3, Al2O3–Nd2O3, Al2O3–Sm2O3 coatings drastically improved the chromia-forming alloy high temperature oxidation behavior, since they decreased the oxidation rate and enhanced the oxide scale adhesion. Re…

Nanostructured metal/oxide coatings

2007

Al based nanocomposite coatings on Cu and glass substrates were obtained in the conditions of severe shear stresses by deformation scheme similar to that of friction. Structure, composition and micromechanical properties were investigated using AFM, XRD, SIMS, electron, optical microscopy and precision microindentation techniques. Coatings are characterized by the high microhardness and good adhesion to the substrates. This is determined by the formation of nanostructured Al-oxide composite stabilized by the presence of oxidized interlayers, which are barriers for the grain growth and intermetallic phase formation. The annealing in vacuum leads to the development of oxygen redistribution pr…

A dilatometric study of the Lao.8Sr0.2MnO3 sintering behaviour

1997

Abstract The sintering behaviour of La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 has been studied by dilatometry between 1100 and 1800 K in various oxygen potentials [pure oxygen, air and nitrogen (PO2 = 1 × 10−5 bar)]. The starting material was prepared by spray pyrolysis of aqueous solutions of nitrates. Two classical sinter stages, neck formation and grain growth respectively, were evidenced from dilatometric curves and this result was corroborated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. The rate of densification was found to be directly dependent on oxygen partial pressure, the best conditions being in nitrogen. These results are discussed in terms of vacancy diffusion and oxygen …

Grain growth in Na 0.5 Bi 0.5 TiO 3 -based solid solutions

2019

This paper discusses effects of different dopants, sintering technique and parameters on microstructure and properties of pure and Yb, Er-doped Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT). All stoichiometric compositions follow the abnormal grain growth mechanism (AGG) and exhibit a bimodal grain size distribution. Bi over-stoichiometry, two step sintering and hot pressing are effective inhibitors of AGG. Microstructure of sintered NBT greatly influences such properties as dielectric permittivity and depolarization temperature.

Atomic force microscopy and Raman investigation on the sintering process of amorphous SiO2 nanoparticles

2010

We report an experimental investigation on the sintering process induced in fumed silica powders by isochronal thermal treatments at T=1270 K. Three types of fumed silica are considered, consisting of amorphous SiO2 (a-SiO2) particles with mean diameters 7, 14, and 40 nm. The study is performed by atomic force microscopy (AFM), to follow the morphological changes, and by Raman scattering, to obtain information on the concomitant structural modifications. The former method indicates that the sintering process proceeds by aggregation of single particles into larger grains, whose sizes increase with the thermal treatment duration. Furthermore, for each fumed silica type considered, the quantit…
