A multilayer model for self-propagating high-temperature synthesis of inter-metallic compounds
2007
International audience; Self-propagating high-temperature synthesis of intermetallic compounds is of wide interest. We consider reactions in a binary system in which the rise and fall of the temperature during the reaction is such that one of the reacting metals melts but not the other. For such a system, using the phase diagram of the binary system, we present a general theory that describes the reaction taking place in a single solid particle of one component surrounded by the melt of the second component. The theory gives us a set of kinetic equations that describe the propagation of the phase interfaces in the solid particle and the change in composition of the melt that surrounds it. I…
Tetragonal Heusler Compounds for Spintronics
2013
With respect to the requirements of spin torque transfer (STT) materials, one the most promising materials families are the tunable tetragonal Heusler compounds based on Mn2YZ (Y=Co,Fe,Ni,Rh,...; Z=Al, Ga, Sn). They form the inverse cubic Heusler structure with three distinct magnetic sublattices, which allows a fine tuning of the magnetic properties. Starting with the stoichiometric Mn3Ga compound, we explored the complete phase diagram of Mn3-xYxZ (Y=Co, Fe, Ni and Z=Ga ). All series exhibit thermally stable magnetic properties. As we demonstrate, Mn3-xFexGa series, which are tetragonal over the whole range of compositions, are good as hard magnets, whereas magnetically more weak Mn3-xNix…
Critical issues in the PD testing methodology for XLPE-insulated MV cables: An experimental case
2017
This paper describes some critical issues arising during the partial discharge (PD) testing of a 500m delivery length of an XLPE-insulated MV cable. At first, conventional PD measurements were performed on the whole length by using a standard acquisition system; PDs activity was detected, but the system allowed the operator to localize the PDs only on a length of 70 m. A visual inspection of this section highlighted the presence of an excoriation in the outer sheet. Aiming at a more accurate pin-pointing of the defect, more measurements were carried out in the proximity of the outer defect using a portable PD detection system. These measurements showed PDs activity, whose source was located…
The Grain Boundary Wetting Phenomena in the Ti-Containing High-Entropy Alloys: A Review
2021
In this review, the phenomenon of grain boundary (GB) wetting by melt is analyzed for multicomponent alloys without principal components (also called high-entropy alloys or HEAs) containing titanium. GB wetting can be complete or partial. In the former case, the liquid phase forms the continuous layers between solid grains and completely separates them. In the latter case of partial GB wetting, the melt forms the chain of droplets in GBs, with certain non-zero contact angles. The GB wetting phenomenon can be observed in HEAs produced by all solidification-based technologies. GB leads to the appearance of novel GB tie lines Twmin and Twmax in the multicomponent HEA phase diagrams. The so-cal…
The Acoustic Wave Behavior Within the PEA Cell for Space Charge Measurement
2018
In order to evaluate the acoustic wave behavior within the Pulsed Electro Acoustic (PEA) cell, a simulation model has been developed in this work. The model, implemented in Matlab environment, is based on the analogy between acoustic and electrical quantities. Therefore, it was possible to model the PEA cell as cascade connected lossy transmission lines. The model has been validated theoretically by making a comparison with a simulation result found in literature. The experimental validation has also been made by using the PEA cell of the LEPRE high voltage lab. In addition, four graphs have been realized. Two of them can be used to establish in easy and fast way to obtain the minimum groun…
Stability analysis of a paramagnetic spheroid in a precessing field
2019
Abstract The stability of a paramagnetic prolate or oblate spheroidal particle in a precessing magnetic field is studied. The bifurcation diagram is calculated analytically as a function of the magnetic field frequency and the precession angle. The orientation of the particle in the synchronous regime is calculated. The rotational dynamics and the mean rotational frequency in the asynchronous regime are also obtained. The theoretical model we describe enables the analytic calculation of the dynamics of the particle in the limiting case when the motion is periodic. The theoretical models were also compared with experimental results of rod like particle dynamics in a precessing magnetic field…
Mass calibration of the energy axis in ToF- E elastic recoil detection analysis
2016
We report on procedures that we have developed to mass-calibrate the energy axis of ToF-E histograms in elastic recoil detection analysis. The obtained calibration parameters allow one to transform the ToF-E histogram into a calibrated ToF-M histogram.
Real space observation of two-dimensional Bloch wave interferences in a negative index photonic crystal cavity
2008
We report here the direct observation of two-dimensional (2D) Bloch wave interferences in a negative index photonic crystal by using optical near-field microscopy techniques. The photonic crystal is formed by a defectless honeycomb lattice of air holes etched in III-V semiconductor slab. A scanning near-field optical microscope is used to visualize spatially, as well as spectrally, the light distribution inside the photonic crystal. The recorded near-field spectra and maps presented here unambiguously demonstrate the Bloch wave interferences within the photonic crystal. Then, the spectral and spatial evolution of these interferences allows us to recover experimentally the 2D band diagram of…
Online Management of Hybrid DRAM-NVMM Memory for HPC
2019
Non-volatile main memories (NVMMs) offer a comparable performance to DRAM, while requiring lower static power consumption and enabling higher densities. NVMM therefore can provide opportunities for improving both energy efficiency and costs of main memory. Previous hybrid main memory management approaches for HPC either do not consider the unique characteristics of NVMMs, depend on high profiling costs, or need source code modifications. In this paper, we investigate HPC applications' behaviors in the presence of NVMM as part of the main memory. By performing a comprehensive study of HPC applications and based on several key observations, we propose an online hybrid memory architecture for …
